Abstract:

Diplomová práce jedná o kanadském národním hrdinovi, příslušníkovi Métis komunity Louisovi Rielovi, který v letech 1869 a 1885 vedl dvě povstání proti kanadské vládě, cílem kterých bylo udělení územních práv pro členy Métis komunity na kanadském Severo-západě, zabezpečení vlastní samosprávy na obývaných územích a formální rozpoznaní Métisov jako samostatného národa původního kanadského obyvatelstva. Louis Riel byl v roku 1885 odsouzený za vlastizradu a popravený. Od své smrti se stal inspirací pro nespočetné množství autorů. V literárních dílech byl zobrazovaný jako zrádce, náboženský fanatik, martýr, politický vůdce, a jeden ze zakladatelů Kanadské Konfederace. Cílem diplomové práce je porovnat dvě nejrozporuplnější literární znázornění Louise Riela a to jeho negativný obraz zrádce a jeho obraz jako politického a náboženského vůdce Métisů. Pro tento účel diplomová práce analyzuje dva historické romány, J. E. Collinsův The Story of Louis Riel, the Rebel Chief (1885) a The Scorched-Wood People (1977) od Rudyho Wieba. První kapitola rozebírá vztah literatury k dějinám, biografii a kolektivní paměti národa. Druhá kapitola sumarizuje život Louisa Riela pomocí jeho autobiografické poezie. Kapitola tři analyzuje Rielova negativné zobrazení jako zrádce krajiny v románě The Story of Louis Riel, the Rebel Chief (1885). Čvrtá kapitola analyzuje Riela, politického vůdce Métisů v historiografickém románě The Scorched-Wood People (1977). Z rozboru románu vyplývá, že obraz Louise Riela je závislý od doby, v níž byly napsané jakož i od dobové politické ideologie. Závěr práce je shrnutím zjištěných poznatku a poukazuje na to, že protikladnost zobrazení Louisa Riela přetrvává i v současnosti, avšak přesunula se z literární do politické sféry.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the Canadian national hero Louis Riel, a member of the Métis community, leader of two rebellions against the Canadian government, the aim of which was to assert the territorial rights for the Métis community in the Canadian North-West, gaining of self-government and formal recognition of the Métis as an independent First Nation of Canada. In 1885 Louis Riel was tried for high treason and executed. Since his death he has become an inspiration for countless number of authors. In their literary portrayals he has been depicted as a traitor, a religious fanatic, a martyr, a political leader, and one of the founding fathers of Canadian Confederation. The aim of the thesis is to juxtapose two of the most controversial literary portrayals of Louis Riel, his negative image of a traitor and his image as a political and religious leader of the Métis. The thesis analyses two historical novels, J.E. Collins’s The Story of Louis Riel, the Rebel Chief (1885) and The Scorched-Wood People (1977) by Rudy Wiebe. The first chapter deals with the relationship of literature to history, biography and the collective memory of a nation. The second chapter summarizes the life of Louis Riel through his autobiographical poetry. Chapter three analyses Riel’s negative depiction as a traitor to Canada in the novel The Story of Louis Riel, the Rebel Chief (1885). The fourth chapter analyses Riel, the political leader of the Métis in historiographic novel The Scorched-Wood People (1977). The analyses of the novels reveals that portrayals of Louis Riel are conditioned by the eras in which they were created as well as by the political ideologies. The conclusion summarizes findings of the thesis and suggests that the ambivalence of Riel’s portrayals is present in Canadian society even today, but it has shifted from the literary into the political realm.
