Travelers' way of life: environmental perspective

Abstract:

Práce poskytuje náhled do společenských skupin praktikujících neusedlý způsob života, jejichž členové bývají označováni jako traveleři. Pomocí sociální sondy demonstruje, jak životní způsob jedné sociální skupiny může mít zároveň pozitivní i negativní environmentální dopady. Vznikla etnografickou metodou v období několika měsíců strávených s travelery na cestách, během sezónních prací a chvil odpočinku a rekreace. V ústředí zájmu jsou strategie spotřeby a obživy, ale také role mobility a některých dalších specifických rysů neusedlého životního způsobu v kontextu témat environmentálních studií a sociologie, jako teorie dobrovolné skromnosti, kultury svépomoci a neotribalismu. Ukazuje se, že životní způsob travelerů lze chápat do jisté míry jako šetrný vůči životnímu prostředí, nicméně s určitými výhradami. V pozadí takového jednání stojí jiné než environmentální motivace spíše estetické nebo instrumentální povahy.

Abstract:

The thesis offers a view inside of a segment of society which leads unsettled way of life and which is often referred to as „travellers.“ Using ethnographic method it took place during a period of several months spent among travellers on their trips, seasonal jobs and times of rest and recreation. An example of social probe demonstrates how alternative lifestyles of one social group can have both positive and negative environmental impacts. In the center of interest are strategies of consumption and subsistence as well as the role of mobility and some other specific characteristics of unsettled way of life in contexts of environmental studies and sociology, such as voluntary simplicity, DiY culture and neotribalism. It appears that travellers’ way of life can be can be understood, to certain matter, as environmentally considerate, although under certain conditions. In the background of these actions are other than environmental motives of rather aesthetic or instrumental nature.
