Qualities of selected types of self-adhesive plastic films and possibilities of their removal using organic solvent-gel systems. Restoration of an advertising poster pasted over with self-adhesive plastic film.

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zjistit a ověřit, jaké jsou možnosti odstraňování samolepících folií. Poté tyto skutečnosti potvrdit nebo vyvrátit u restaurování reálného objektu - plakátu z roku 1937 přelepeného samolepící folií. Práce se zabývá problematikou samolepicích fólií obecně a metodami jejich odstraňování. Skládá se ze tří okruhů zaměření: teoretický, experimentální a praktický. Teoretická část nastiňuje stručný historický přehled vývoje samolepicích fólií pro pochopení kontextu jejich vzniku, jejich obecný popis, využití a možnosti odstraňování. Následuje experimentální část, v níž jsou prověřeny způsoby odstraňování běžně dostupných samolepicích laminovacích fólií pomocí organických rozpouštědel v různých nosičích. Poslední okruh této práce je věnován samotnému proces restaurování reklamního plakátu. Zároveň obsahuje stručný umělecko-historický přehled jak plakátu samotného, tak firmy, která jeho výrobu objednala.

Abstract:

The goal of this this master's thesis is research and verifying of options of self-adhesive foil removing. Afterwards the confirmation or debunking of the ways applied for restoration of an artifact - a poster from year 1937, laminated with pressure-sensitive plastic foil. This thesis focuses on the issue of pressure-sensitive tapes and foils in general, along with the methods for its removal. Thesis consists of three areas of focus: theoretical, experimental, and practical. Theoretical part outlines the brief historical summary of the development of self-adhesive foils for understanding of the context of their origination. This part also contains the general characterization of pressure-sensitive foils, their employment, and options for their removal from paper. Experimental part of the thesis includes the research on the ways of removing of a plastic pressure-sensitive foil using organic solvents in various carriers. The last area of focus of this thesis deals with the restoration process of the advertising poster. It also includes a concise artistic and historical overview of the poster itself so as the company that commissioned it.
