Analysis of the Stereotypical Development of Lesbian Characters and its Impact on Audiences

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je objasniť súčasné stereotypné zobrazovanie lesieb v televízii. Práca sa zameriava na vývoj prezentácie v médiách od 20. storočia a spomína prvé lesbické postavy v televízii. Rozoberá stereotypné fyzické atribúty vytvorené pre heteronormatívne publikum, ako aj prevládajúce negatívne charakterové črty, ako je potláčanie emócií alebo neschopnosť nadviazať zdravý vzťah. Okrem toho sa zameriava na negatívny trópus s názvom „bury your gays“, v rámci ktorého sú homosexuálne postavy v deji zabíjané za trest alebo ako divadlo s cieľom šokovať. Na základe toho poukazuje na vplyv na publikum a hnutia, ktoré sa snažia danú reprezentáciu zlepšiť. Skúma črty a trópy hlavných lesbických postáv seriálov The 100 a Killing Eve, Lexy a Villanelle. Napriek tomu, že seriály majú rôzne žánre a sú zamerané na odlišné publikum, dodržiavajú stereotypné zobrazovania lesieb a končia ich život bezdôvodnou smrťou krátko po pohlavnom styku s partnerkou. Okrem toho práca podrobne analyzuje vývoj vzťahov medzi hlavnou lesbickou postavou a jej bisexuálnou partnerkou. Okrem toho sa zameriava na vplyv na publikum na základe údajov zozbieraných na fórach a sociálnych sietiach, ako sú Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr a Facebook.

Abstract:

This master thesis aims to clarify the current representation of lesbians in TV and their stereotypical portrayal. The thesis focuses on the development of presentation in media from the 20th century and mentions the first main openly lesbian characters on TV. It discusses both stereotypical physical attributes created for a heteronormative audience as well as prevailing negative character traits like suppression of emotions or inability to engage in a healthy relationship. Moreover, it focuses on the negative trope of bury your gays whereby queer characters are killed off in storylines as a punishment or a mere spectacle to create a shock value. Based on this, it points out the impact on the audience and the movements that try to improve the given representation. It studies the traits and tropes of the lead lesbian characters of the series The 100 and Killing Eve, Lexa and Villanelle. Even though the series are of different genres, and aim for different audiences, they follow the stereotypes of lesbian portrayal and end the lives of lesbians by unreasonable death soon after sexual intercourse with their partner. On top of that, the thesis analyses the development of the relationships between the lead lesbian character and their bisexual partner in detail. Furthermore, it focuses on the impact on audiences based on data gathered on forums and social media accounts like Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.
