The Theme of Holocaust in Works by Aleš Veselý

Abstract:

Aleš Veselý (1935-2015) patří mezi nejvýznamnější osobnosti české umělecké scény. Tato bakalářská práce sleduje především Veselého tvorbu pomníků a soch, které jsou věnovány obětem holocaustu. Při tvorbě těchto objektů nejčastěji kombinoval materiály jako jsou kov a kámen. Ve své tvorbě se často obracel ke kořenům judaismu a zabýval se smyslem lidské existence. Na příkladu vybraných pomníků můžeme pozorovat systematické opakovaní určitých symbolů, jako je Davidova hvězda či brána a ztvárnění židovských tradic. Cílem této bakalářské práce je kromě analýzy a interpretace vybraných objektů sochaře Aleše Veselého, také snaha poukázat na důležitost těchto děl v rámci kolektivní paměti lidstva, ale také upozornit širokou veřejnost na to, že i pomník může být uměleckým dílem. Bakalářská práce obsahuje také obrazové přílohy.

Abstract:

Aleš Veselý (1935-2015) belongs among the most significant personalities of the Czech artistic scene. This bachelor thesis deals mainly with Veselý’s creation of memorials and statues, which are dedicated to the victims of holocaust. When creating these memorials, he often combined materials such as metal and stone. In his work, he often turned to the beginnings of Judaism and he dealt with the meaning of human existence. Some chosen memorials serve as an example that enables us to observe the systematically repeated use of certain symbols, for example Star of David or gate and the rendering of Jewish traditions. Besides the analysis and interpretation of some chosen objects by Aleš Veselý, the aim of this bachelor thesis is to emphasize the significance of his work in collective human memory and to demonstrate to the public that even a memorial can be a piece of artistic work. This bachelor thesis includes also an appendix with illustrations.
