Applications of Mirror Therapy in chronic hemiplegia: case report.

Abstract:

My paper deals with stroke, an acute pathological condition lasting more than 24 hours caused by obstruction (complete or partial) or rupture of a cerebral vessel, which causes the appearance of signs and symptoms due to a deficit of brain function. The methods of post-stroke rehabilitation treatment and, in particular, mirror therapy will be illustrated: a new rehabilitative approach that determines the activation of mirror neurons located in the motor and premotor areas of the frontal lobe. After a brief introduction about the anatomy of the central nervous system and, in particular, the function of mirror neurons, it will be the stroke and the application of mirror therapy, with the relative results. The theoretical part of the paper will conclude with the exposition of the post -stroke pharmacological, surgical and physiotherapy treatment plan. This will be followed by the presentation of a clinical case that will illustrate the results obtained from the application of mirror therapy on stroke patients.

Abstract:

Il mio elaborato tratta dell'ictus, condizione patologica acuta di durata superiore alle 24 ore causata dall'ostruzione (completa o parziale) o dalla rottura di un vaso cerebrale, che determina la comparsa di segni e sintomi riconducibili ad un deficit delle funzioni cerebrali. Verranno illustrate le modalit? del trattamento riabilitativo post ictus e, in particolare, la mirror therapy: un nuovo approccio riabilitativo che determina l'attivazione dei neuroni a specchio situati nelle aree motoria e premotoria del lobo frontale. Dopo una breve introduzione circa l'anatomia del sistema nervoso centrale e, in particolare, della funzione dei neuroni a specchio, si tratter? dell'ictus e dell'applicazione della mirror therapy, con i relativi risultati. La parte teorica dell'elaborato si concluder? con l'esposizione del piano di trattamento farmacologico, chirurgico e fisioterapico post ictus. A questa seguir? la presentazione di un caso clinico dove si illustreranno i risultati ottenuti dall'applicazione della mirror therapy su paziente affetto da ictus.
