From global to local: the medieval pilgrimage in Tuscany. The Via Francigena.

Abstract:

The purpose of the first chapter is to reflect on the concept of the Via Francigena in its his- torical and historiographical context. The territory analyzes the geographical delimitation of present-day Tuscany, whose geographical borders in the Middle Ages corresponded to the Duchy of Tuscia, which was established in the Lombard period in 574, electing Lucca as its capital. The scholars, especially the Italian ones, has identified the Via Francigena as a single road, without par- allel paths, which connects Canterbury to Rome. The analysis of the capital follows the media and conceptual construction of the right term-road, reaching conclusions that are inconsistent with what is normally held by scholars of pilgrim art in the twelfth century. From the Itineraria investigated (the first was written by Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, between 990 and 994; the second, dated around 1154 and 1160, was drawn up by Nikulás Berggson, second abbot of the Benedictine Ice- landic monastery of Munkaþverá; the last testifies the return journey from the third crusade by Philip Augustus in 1191) no intertextual references to the lexicon of Francigena route is emerged. Rather, this group defines an orientation in which the nominal identification of the orientation fol- lowed is completely absent. If the itineraries to Santiago de Compostela are codified, as the Codex Calixtinus openly testifies, the peninsular situation is clearly different: in this territorial context there would be no road routes in possession of a strict and specific naming. The second chapter is dedicated to the landscape of Tuscany in the 12th century. Particular attention has been paid to the case of San Gimignano. A village surrounded by nature, whose rela- tionship with the external space determines its aesthetic physiognomy. The chapter explores how in the experience of the pilgrimage of the twelfth century the perception of San Gimignano is linked to the visual representation of three distinct degrees of power: the towers, witnesses of secular power; the walls, an instrument of military defense; the cathedral, the religious hub of the spiritual experi- ence. The link between the village and the phenomenon of medieval pilgrimage is documented in at least two sources. In the 10th century San Dunstan of Canterbury, on the direct way to Rome, passed through ten localities, including San Gimignano; and also the memory of Sigeric informs that Sce Gemiane corresponded to the nineteenth stage of the journey undertaken by the archbishop on his return from Rome to Canterbury. The aesthetics of the medieval village has been altered by radical changes that occurred during the modern and contemporary era, which resulted in substan- tial demolitions and additions. These are excluded from the research, going back to try to restore the urban image between the 12th and 13th centuries. The second part of the chapter investigates the strategies through which a religious site (Saint Antimo Abbey) not directly located on the main roads succeeded in attracting pilgrims. The first one is the creation of a sound dimension, progres- sively followed by the activation of the sight, which reach its climax when the building emerges from the horizon. The abbey of Sant’Antimo is a magnificent Romanesque construction located in the hills of the Val d’Orcia, thirteen kilometers from the road segment passing through San Quirico d’Orcia, mentioned by Sigeric (Sce Quiric), by Nikulás (Klerkaborg) and by Filippo Augusto (San Clerc). To reach this spiritual location it was necessary to follow a road deviation. As mentioned, the main attraction element was triggered by the sound of the bells, that stands out in the sound me- dieval dimension. ty bond, marking the main phases of the liturgy and the key moments of the ecclesiastical calendar. However, the special location within areas touched by pilgrimage bestows a peculiar logistical role, which visual- ly transforms the bell towers into a sort of geographical marker. After the sound dimension, the vis- ual one appears. The silhouette of the abbey emerges in the ideal midpoint of a small valley. From the planimetric point of view, the architectural structure is classifiable like a “pilgrimage church”. The ambulatory is undoubtedly the most important visual part, which entails the possession of im- portant relics and invites the pilgrims to pay a visit to them. Starting from the studies of artistic perception, as well as of visual anthropology and the sa- cred, the third chapter is dedicated to the study of building and sculptural standards repeated in the selected territory. In this context there are also images, objects of worship and internal circuits of religious churches, that organize the physical performances of people. The census of the architec- tural structures establish a parallelism between the religious churches along the Francigena Route and the concept of non-lieu elaborated by Marc Augé. Both create the circulation conditions, are more or less erected according to a standard planimetric shape and relate to the road network by means of a semantic apparatus that produces an effect of recognition, acting as a points of reference for postmodern man as well as for the medieval pilgrim. As noted by Augé: “Non-place paradox: the foreigner lost in a country he does not know finds himself only in the anonymity of highways, gas stations, department stores or hotel chains. The sign of a petrol brand constitutes a reassuring point of reference for him and it is a relief to find health and food products or household items con- secrated by multinational brands on the supermarket shelves.” Without a marker indicating its main purpose (for example for medieval buildings to celebrate a religious cult; sacralize the environmen- tal context; for contemporary ones, satisfying the conditions of postmodern man's food sustenance; connecting downtowns and peripheries) they would be anonymous and devoid of their purpose. Through the visual marker, the external and internal surface is equipped with elements that make them recognizable in the eyes of the beholder, and highlight the pragmatic purpose for which they were built: “they are also defined through words or texts that they propose to us [...] we know that individuals interact only with texts, with no other enunciators other than “moral” people or institu- tions (airports, airlines, ministry of transport, commercial companies, traffic police, municipalities), whose presence is guesses vaguely or states more explicitly [...] with injunctions, advice, com- ments, “messages” transmitted by the countless “media” (signs, screens, posters) that are an integral part of the contemporary landscape.” After the investigation dedicated to the symbolic value of these architectures, the analysis proceeds by investigating the liminal visual elements (images that foreshadow the final destination of the journey, such as Christ's Entry into Jerusalem) and performa- tive elements (ambulatories, crypts with relics).

Účelem první kapitoly je zamyslet se nad konceptem Via Francigena v jeho historickém a historiografickém kontextu. Území analyzuje geografické vymezení dnešního Toskánska, jehož zeměpisné hranice ve středověku odpovídaly Tuskému vévodství, které bylo založeno v lombardském období v roce 574, přičemž hlavním městem byla Lucca. Vědci, zejména ti italští, identifikovali Via Francigena jako jedinou cestu bez paralelních cest, která spojuje Canterbury s Římem. Analýza hlavního města sleduje mediální a koncepční konstrukci správného termínu-silnice a dochází k závěrům, které jsou v rozporu s tím, co ve dvanáctém století obvykle zastávají učenci poutního umění. Z vyšetřovaného Itineraria (první napsal Sigeric, arcibiskup z Canterbury, mezi lety 990 a 994; druhé, datované kolem let 1154 a 1160, vypracoval Nikulás Berggson, druhý opat benediktinského ledovského kláštera Munkaþverá; poslední svědčí o zpáteční cestě ze třetí křížové výpravy od Filipa Augusta v roce 1191) se neobjevily žádné intertextové odkazy na lexikon francigenské trasy. Tato skupina spíše definuje orientaci, ve které zcela chybí nominální identifikace následující orientace. Pokud budou itineráře do Santiaga de Compostela kodifikovány, jak otevřeně vypovídá Codex Calixtinus, poloostrovní situace je jasně odlišná: v tomto územním kontextu by neexistovaly žádné silniční cesty s přísným a konkrétním názvem. Druhá kapitola je věnována krajině Toskánska ve 12. století. Zvláštní pozornost byla věnována případu San Gimignano. Vesnice obklopená přírodou, jejíž vztah k vnějšímu prostoru určuje její estetickou fyziognomii. Kapitola zkoumá, jak je ve zkušenosti pouti ve 12. století vnímání San Gimignana spojeno s vizuálním znázorněním tří odlišných stupňů moci: věží, svědků světské moci; zdi, nástroj vojenské obrany; katedrála, náboženské centrum duchovního zážitku. Souvislost mezi vesnicí a fenoménem středověké pouti je dokumentována nejméně ve dvou pramenech. V 10. století procházela San Dunstan v Canterbury přímou cestou do Říma přes deset lokalit, včetně San Gimignano; a také vzpomínka na Sigeric informuje, že Sce Gemiane odpovídal devatenácté fázi cesty, kterou podnikl arcibiskup po svém návratu z Říma do Canterbury. Estetiku středověké vesnice změnily radikální změny, ke kterým došlo během moderní a současné éry, které vyústily v zásadní demolice a doplňky. Ty jsou z výzkumu vyloučeny a vrací se zpět k pokusu o obnovení městského obrazu mezi 12. a 13. stoletím. Druhá část kapitoly zkoumá strategie, kterými se náboženské místo (opatství Saint Antimo), které se nenachází přímo na hlavních silnicích, podařilo přilákat poutníky. Prvním z nich je vytvoření zvukové dimenze, po které postupně následuje aktivace zraku, který dosáhne svého vrcholu, když se budova vynoří z obzoru. Opatství Sant'Antimo je nádherná románská stavba, která se nachází v kopcích údolí Val d'Orcia, třináct kilometrů od úseku silnice procházejícího San Quirico d'Orcia, o kterém hovoří Sigeric (Sce Quiric), Nikulás (Klerkaborg) a autor Filippo Augusto (San Clerc). K dosažení tohoto duchovního umístění bylo nutné sledovat silniční odchylku. Jak již bylo zmíněno, hlavní přitažlivý prvek byl spuštěn zvukem zvonů, který vyniká ve zvukové středověké dimenzi. Středověká fonosféra se vyznačovala několika zvuky a několika zvuky a emise zvuku mohla být silně poutavá. i, která vizuálně proměňuje zvonice v jakési zeměpisné označení. Po zvukové dimenzi se objeví vizuální. Silueta opatství se objevuje v ideálním středu malého údolí. Z planimetrického hlediska lze architektonickou strukturu zařadit jako „poutní kostel“. Ambulance je bezpochyby nejdůležitější vizuální částí, která zahrnuje držení důležitých relikvií a zve poutníky k návštěvě. Počínaje studiemi uměleckého vnímání, vizuální vizuální antropologie a posvátnosti je třetí kapitola věnována studiu stavebních a sochařských standardů opakovaných na vybraném území. V této souvislosti existují také obrazy, předměty uctívání a vnitřní okruhy náboženských církví, které organizují fyzické výkony lidí. Sčítání architekturních struktur vytváří paralelismus mezi náboženskými církvemi na trase Francigena a konceptem nelži, který vypracoval Marc Augé. Oba vytvářejí podmínky oběhu, jsou víceméně postaveny podle standardního planimetrického tvaru a vztahují se k silniční síti pomocí sémantického aparátu, který vytváří efekt uznání a slouží jako referenční body pro postmoderního člověka i pro středověký poutník. Jak poznamenal Augé: „Paradox bez místa: cizinec ztracený v zemi, kterou nezná, se ocitá pouze v anonymitě dálnic, čerpacích stanic, obchodních domů nebo hotelových řetězců. Znamení benzínové značky je pro něj uklidňujícím referenčním bodem a je úlevou najít v regálech supermarketů výrobky pro zdraví a potraviny nebo předměty pro domácnost, které jsou v rukou nadnárodních značek. “ Bez značky označující její hlavní účel (například pro středověké stavby k oslavě náboženského kultu; sakralizace environmentálního kontextu; pro současné, splňující podmínky výživy potravin postmoderního člověka; spojující centra a periferie) by byly anonymní a zbavení jejich účelu. Prostřednictvím vizuální značky je vnější a vnitřní povrch vybaven prvky, díky nimž jsou rozpoznatelné v očích pozorovatele a zdůrazňují pragmatický účel, pro který byly vytvořeny: „jsou také definovány slovy nebo texty, které nám navrhují [...] víme, že jednotlivci interagují pouze s texty, přičemž kromě „morálních“ lidí nebo institucí (letišť, leteckých společností, ministerstva dopravy, obchodních společností, dopravní policie, obcí) neexistují žádní jiní oznamovatelé, jejichž přítomnost lze odhadnout neurčitě nebo výslovněji uvádí [...] s příkazy, radami, komentáři, „zprávami“ přenášenými nesčetnými „médii“ (nápisy, obrazovky, plakáty), které jsou nedílnou součástí současné krajiny. “ Po vyšetřování věnovaném symbolické hodnotě těchto architektur pokračuje analýza zkoumáním mezních vizuálních prvků (obrazů, které předznamenávají konečný cíl cesty, jako je Kristův vstup do Jeruzaléma) a výkonných prvků (ambulátory, krypty s relikviemi ).
