Neomarxism and Cultural Changes in the USA during the Vietnam War - the Influence of Herbert Marcuse

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je práce filozofa Herberta Marcuseho a její vliv na americkou společnost během vietnamské války. V této době se v USA formovala nová sociální hnutí a alternativní kultura, která byla silně ovlivněna levicovým smýšlením (ať už prací Karla Marxe, či jinými neomarxistickými mysliteli). Během druhé světové války přichází do USA i Herbert Marcuse a právě zde začíná tvořit svojí kritickou filozofii vůči kapitalistickému systému. Tato kritika se později stává důležitým teoretickým rámcem pro americkou mládež a jejich alternativní kulturu. V první části této práce se tak zaměřím na díla Herberta Marcuse, která vydává po příchodu do USA - především na problematiku kapitalistické společnosti a opozice vůči ní. Zde tak proberu feministická hnutí, novou levici a afroamerická hnutí z teoretického pohledu Marcuseho prací. V druhé části práce se detailněji zaměřím právě na tato hnutí (afroamerická, feministická hnutí a na novou levici) a porovnám jejich fungování během 60. a 70. let 20. století s představou Herberta Marcuseho, kterou podal ve svých publikacích. Úkolem práce je ověřit hypotézy vznesené v úvodu práce.

Abstract:

Theme of this bachelor´s thesis is the work of german philosopher Herbert Marcuse and his influence on american society during the period of war in Vietnam. New social movements and counter-culture were forming in the USA in this period. This culture was highly inspired by leftism and by work outgoing from legacy of Karl Marx and thoughts of neomarxists. Herbert Marcuse came to the USA before World War Two. His thinking was revised in the next few years and he became the critic of american capitalistic society - Marcuse created the concept of one-dimensional society which was essentially repressive. I examine late work of Herbert Marcuse in this thesis from period when he came to the USA and when he created his critical concept of one-dimensional society. My basic interest is in his theory of capitalist society and in the possibility of change in this society. Marcuse is concerned with three head movements which can bring cultural and political change in society ? with feminist movement, New Left and with black movements. I am looking at this movements in the next part of this thesis (practicaly aimed) and theirs development in american society during 60´s and 70´s. Subsequently I am studying these three movements and I am comparing them with theoretical thoughts of Herbert Marcuse. I answer to three hypothesis in the end which were given in the introduction of this thesis. These hypothesis are concerning with Herbert Marcuse and his influence on american society during 60´s and 70´s and with impact of cultural and social changes from this period to the present policy and society of the USA.
