The social chronicle in comics: the example of Pascal Rabaté

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with a French comic book creator Pascal Rabaté and his pieces of work Bienvenue à Jobourg, Les petits ruisseaux and Le petit rien tout neuf avec un ventre jaune. Our objective was to define the genre of the social chronicle in which these comic books are classified. We divided our work into three parts. In the first theoretical part, we examined the definition of comics (bande dessinée in French), the evolution of francophone comics, the diversification of genres, the contemporary francophone comics and the change of its status. We also dedicated a significant part to the analysis and reading of comics. In the analytical part, we proceeded to analyze the chosen comic books. In the last synthetic part of our study, we created a definition of Pascal Rabaté´s social chronicle. In this thesis, we proved that comics had become a real mode of expression which is able to include new genres and attract new readers.

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá autorem francouzského komiksu Pascalem Rabaté a jeho díly Bienvenue à Jobourg, Les petits ruisseaux a Le petit rien tout neuf avec un ventre jaune. Naším cílem bylo definovat žánr sociální kronika, do kterého jsou tyto tři komiksy řazeny. Práci jsme rozdělili do tří částí. V první teoretické části jsme se zabývali definicí komiksu (francouzsky bande dessinée), vývojem frankofonního komiksu, jeho žánrovým rozrůzněním, současným frankofonním komiksem a změnou jeho statusu. Významnou část jsme také věnovali analýze a čtení komiksu. V analytické části jsme přistoupili k analýze námi vybraných komiksů. V poslední syntetické části naší studie jsme vytvořili definici sociální kroniky Pascala Rabaté. V práci jsme dokázali, že se komiks stal opravdovým vyjadřovacím prostředkem, který je schopen pojmout nové žánry a zaujmout nové čtenáře.
