An annotated translation of a previously untranslated English text and text analysis

Abstract:

This thesis aims to perform a complex analysis of an English non-literary text and its Czech translation and describe the strategies and methods used during the translation focused on localization and cultural filter. The chosen analyzed text is the manual for the software Foxit PhantomPDF. The theoretical part describes the text's genre, principles of localization, and the text analysis's framework. The practical part contains three parts: the source text analysis, the text's translation, and the localized text analysis. Both analyses are based on Christiane Nord's model. The translator used the strategies of absolute equivalence and explicitness and different sentence constructions. The analysis found out that the target text contains culture-specific elements which needed to be localized. These differences are most distinct in non-verbal elements, lexis, and suprasegmental features.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je vykonať komplexnú prekladateľskú analýzu anglického neliterárneho textu a jeho českého prekladu, a taktiež popísať prekladateľské stratégie a postupy so zameraním na lokalizáciu a kultúrny filter. Zvoleným materiálom je manuál softvéru Foxit PhantomPDF. Teoretická časť sa zaoberá žánrom textu a princípmi lokalizácie a textovej analýzy. Praktická časť sa skladá z troch častí: analýzy zdrojového text, jeho prekladu do češtiny a analýzy lokalizovaného textu. Obe analýzy sú založené na modely Christiany Nordovej. Použité prekladateľské postupy sú nahradzovanie úplnými náprotivkami a explicitácia, a rozdielna štruktúra viet. Rovnako bolo zistené, že cieľový text obsahuje kultúrne-špecifické prvky, ktoré je nutné lokalizovať. Tieto rozdiely sú najviac viditeľné počas analýzy neverbálnych prvkov, slovnej zásoby a suprasegmentálnych znakov.
