Society As a Garden: Foucauldian concept of the “Right to Kill”, its Justification and Implementation in the Contemporary World

Anotace:

Mým záměrem v této práci je prozkoumat určitý aspekt toho jak, mezi množstvím neschůdných úkolů, které si sobě stanovila (Bauman 1991), modernita selhala přispět k dosáhnutí společenského míru a omezit válčení. Cílem mé práce je tedy prohlédnout a prokázat, že jsme nikdy dřív než s dohodem modernity nesvědčili válce s tak ničivým potenciálem. Ze stanoviska 20. a 21. století je moji snahou pochopit agendu, na jejíž základě jsou v současné době války zdůvodněné a vedené, zatimco jsou oběti prohlašené za kolaterální. Na té cestě teoretické základy hledám v prácích Michel Foucaulta a Zygmunta Baumana. Foucaultovský koncepty biomoci a státního rasismu budou prezentovány jakoby ideologické jádro moderní války, zatímco Baumanová práce bude sloužit k pochopení technických a organizačních aspektů modernity, které prostřednictvím procesů byrokratizace a technologizace umožnily společenskou shodu s ozbrojenými konflikty. Na konec budu závěry práce ilustrovat tím, že budu identifikovat biopolitické a Baumanské vzorce v současné americké zahraniční politice a mechanismech stojící za „válkou proti teroru“.

Abstract:

In this work, I intend to investigate certain aspects of how, among the multitude of unviable tasks that it set itself (Bauman 1991), modernity failed to invest in the management of social peace and restriction of warfare. The aim of my work is, therefore, to demonstrate and examine the fact that never before the modern times did we witness wars of such destructive potential. I place myself in the contemporary context of the 20th and 21st centuries with an effort to understand the agenda which is used as a basis for wars nowadays being led and justified while pronouncing their victims collateral damage. In doing so, I shall seek theoretical foundation in the scholarships of Michel Foucault and Zygmunt Bauman. Foucauldian concepts of biopower and state racism will be presented as the ideological staple of modern warfare, while Bauman’s theses will be used to showcase the organizational and technical facets of modernity which ensure social consent to armed conflicts through the processes of bureaucratization and technologization. Finally, I will apply the conclusions of the thesis to identify biopolitical and Baumanian patterns in the current American foreign policy and the mechanisms behind its “war on terror.”
