The Power of a Story: The Aspects of Canadian Indigenous “Postcolonial” Gothic in Richard Wagamese’s Indian Horse and Carol Rose GoldenEagle’s Bone Black

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje dvě díla napsaná kanadskými domorodými autory – Indian Horse (2012) od Richarda Wagamese a Bone Black (2019) od Carol Rose GoldenEagle. Obě tato díla se zabývají aktuálními tématy, které rezonují kanadskou společností – problematikou rezidenčních škol a pohřešovaných a zavraždě-ných domorodých žen. Práce pak tato díla zkoumá z pohledu kanadské domorodé „postkoloniální“ fikce a jejích znaků, konkrétně na základě aspektů gotiky, zkušenosti domorodých obyvatel a postkoloniality společně s konceptem síly příběhu. Nesnaží se jen najít spojitost těchto prvků k žánru za účelem dokázání její užitečnosti při přístupu daným knihám, ale zároveň analyzuje, jak se prvky žánru v dílech projevují. Nakonec má za cíl navrhnout typologii pro daný žánr, která se skládá ze tří aspektů – prostředí, hrozba a tragičnost – které v dílech sleduje, zkoumá jejich použitelnost a jejich projevy.

Abstract:

The present bachelor’s thesis closely analyzes two novels written by Canadian Indigenous authors, Indian Horse (2012) by Richard Wagamese and Bone Black (2019) by Carol Rose GoldenEagle. Both these novels deal with contemporary topics resonating in Canadian society – residential schooling and the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). The thesis then explores these novels from the point of view of Canadian Indigenous “postcolonial” Gothic fiction and its features, namely based on aspects of Gothic, Indigenous experience and postcoloniality with the underlying notion of power of a story. It not only attempts to find their connection to the genre to suggest its usefulness in approaching the novels, but it also analyzes how the features of the genre are demonstrated there. Finally, it aims to suggest a typology for the genre consisting of three aspects – setting, threat and tragicality – which it traces in the novels, explores their applicability to and manifestation in the works.
