The Influence of the Menzerath-Altmann Law on the Length of Linguistic Units

Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza vlivu vybraných gramatických jevů na délku jazykových jednotek se zaměřením na vzájemný vztah mezi délkou slova a délkou klauze v češtině. Podle Menzerath-Altmannova zákona existují vztahy nepřímé úměry mezi jednotkami z bezprostředně sousedících jazykových úrovní. Hypotézou této práce je, že čím delší je klauze, tím kratší jsou v průměru slova, kterými je tvořena. Protože gramatické významy jsou v češtině často vyjadřovány pomocí afixů, dochází jejich vlivem ke změnám v délce slov. První fází byl výběr gramatických kategorií, u kterých je možné testovat hypotézu. Druhou fází byly výpočty průměrných délek klauzí. Výsledky jsou prezentovány formou tabulek a grafů v poslední kapitole práce. V závěru jsou výsledky také interpretovány v kontextu hypotézy této práce s ohledem na aktuální směřování výzkumů Menzerath-Altmannova zákona.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is the analysis of influence of selected grammar categories on the length of language units with main focus on the mutual relationship between the length of the word and the length of the clause. According to the Menzerath-Altmann law, there is a negative correlation between language units from adjecent language levels. The hypothesis of this thesis is "the longer the clause, the shorter (on average) its words". Because grammar categories in Czech language are often expressed by various affixes, they affect the length of the words. The first step was selection of the grammar categories that allow testing the hypothesis. The second step was calculating the average length of the clauses. The results are presented in the form of charts and graphs in the last chapter of the thesis. The results are also interpreted in the final part of the thesis with respect to the current direction in the research of the MAL.
