Epilepsy and its pharmacological treatment as a factor affecting cognitive function and behaviour in the preschool child

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou epilepsie a její farmakologické léčby, které jsou společným faktorem ovlivňujícím kognitivní funkce a chování u dítěte v předškolním věku. Je koncipována jako teoreticko-empirická výzkumní práce. Teoretická část je věnována vymezení klíčových pojmů práce a s nimi spojené problematice. Výzkumná práce použitím kvalitativních výzkumných metod nabízí popis vývoje kognitivních funkcí a charakteristického chování dítěte před a po prvním epileptickém záchvatu spolu s nastavením léčby levetiracetamem. Za pomocí kvantitativního výzkumu pak popisuje vliv epilepsie a nežádoucího účinku levetiracetamu na psychomotorické tempo, exekutivní funkce a zrakovou pozornost u dítěte v předškolním věku. Na základě zhodnocení získaných výsledků šetření nabízí tato práce navržené podpory v oblastech kognitivních funkcí a v chování postižených epilepsií i nežádoucími účinky levetiracetamu, které mohou představovat velký přínos pro pedagogy, rodiče, a hlavně jejich dětí s epilepsií.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of epilepsy and its pharmacological treatment, which are common factors affecting cognitive function and behaviour in preschool children. It is designed as a theoretical-empirical research work. The theoretical part is devoted to defining the key concepts of the thesis and related issues. Using qualitative research methods, the research work offers a description of the development of cognitive functions and characteristic behavior of the child before and after the first epileptic seizure, along with the setting of treatment with levetiracetam. Using quantitative research, it then descres. the impact of epilepsy and the adverse effect of levetiracetam on psychomotor tempo, executive function and visual attention in the preschool child. Based on the evaluation of the obtained results of the investigation, this thesis offers suggested supports in the areas of cognitive function and behavior in those affected by epilepsy as well as the side effects of levetiracetam, which may be of great benefit to educators, parents and especially their children with epilepsy.
