The influence of differentiated instruction on a learner's motivation and reading competence in English

Anotace:

Abstraktní: Diferenciační výuka je jednou z nejdůležitějších otázek ve vzdělávání. Přestože v této široké oblasti existuje mnoho výzkumů, bylo by zajímavé vzít v úvahu předchozí znalosti studentů jejich rodného jazyka. Toto magisterské studium proto analyzovalo diferencovaný obsah v angličtině v individuální třídě. Cílem této studie bylo skutečně prozkoumat implementaci personalizovaného učení podle předchozích znalostí studentky v jejím rodném jazyce, aby se zvýšila její motivace k učení a dovednost čtení v anglickém jazyce. Tato práce používala různé dotazníky (tj. styly učení, strategie učení, motivaci studenta a jazykové přesvědčení studenta) k identifikaci správných metod a přístupů k personalizaci obsahu pro studenta. Pomocí dotazníků lektor zjistil, jak přizpůsobit obsah tak, aby splnil cíle studenta. Protože student byl odborníkem na perskou literaturu, lektorka použila texty a příběhy, které studentka četla před kurzem ve svém rodném jazyce. Protože hlavním cílem studenta bylo zlepšit čtenářskou kompetenci v anglickém jazyce, aby byl schopen číst texty a příběhy v anglickém jazyce, lektor se zaměřil na čtenářské dovednosti studenta se stejným obsahem v cílovém jazyce. Výzkum byl proveden v individuálních online kurzech s dospělým studentem. Důsledky této práce naznačují, že konkrétní zaměření na předchozí znalosti a zájem studentky o její mateřský jazyk prostřednictvím obsahu významně ovlivňuje kompetence jazykového čtení v cílovém jazyce.

Abstract: Differentiation instruction is one of the most important issues in education. Although there is much research in this broad field, it would be interesting to consider learners’ previous knowledge of their native language. Therefore, this master's study analyzed differentiated content in English in a one-to-one classroom. Indeed, this study aimed to investigate the implementation of personalised learning according to the learner’s previous knowledge in her native language to enhance her learning motivation and English language reading skill. This thesis used various questionnaires (i.e. learning styles, learning strategies, learner’s motivation, and learner language beliefs) to identify proper methods and approaches to personalise the content for the learner. Using the questionnaires, the tutor found how to personalise the content to fulfil the learner’s goals. As the learner was an expert in Persian literature, the tutor used the texts and stories that the learner read before the course in her native language. As the learner’s main goal was to enhance reading competency in the English language to be able to read texts and stories in the English language, the tutor focused on the learner’s reading skills with the same content in the target language. The research was conducted in one-to-one online classes with an adult learner. The implications of this thesis suggest that a particular focus on the learner’s previous knowledge and interest in her native language through the content significantly impacts language reading competency in the target language.
