About the life of the Germanic tribes between the turn of the millennium and the start of the migration period

Abstract:

This thesis is a general survey of the life of Germanic tribes spanning the time from approximately the beginning of the first millennium to the beginning of the migration period. Common Germanic traditions, as well as several regional, tribal customs, are described. The early chapters deal with the Germanic pantheon, the importance of individual cults, and the festivals in which these deities were worshiped. Then follows a description of burial methods and the essentials that are associated with funeral rites. Germanic languages are briefly touched upon and some significant surviving inscriptions of this period are analyzed. Further chapters deal with manufacturing processes, particularly the mining and forging of metals and trade in Germanic, but also foreign - mainly Roman - goods. Various types of currency are also concisely mentioned. The final chapter is devoted to the legendary Germanic horse and other animals that were domesticated by these tribes.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá všeobecným náhledem na život germánských kmenů v časovém úseku zhruba od počátku prvního tisíciletí až po začátek stěhování národů. Jsou zde popsány jak zvyky všeobecně germánské, tak i některé zvyky kmenové - lokální. První kapitoly se věnují germánskému panteonu, významu jednotlivých kultů, jakožto i svátkům, při kterých byla tato božstva uctívána. Dále jsou popsány způsoby pohřbívání a náležitosti, které k pohřebnímu ritu patří. Krátce jsou také zmíněny germánské jazyky a některé významné dochované nápisy z tohoto období. Další kapitoly se zabývají výrobními procesy, zejména těžbou kovů a jejich zpracováním a obchodem s germánským, ale i cizím, především římským zbožím. Stručně jsou zmíněny také druhy platidel. Poslední kapitola je věnována bájnému germánskemu koni i dalším zvířatům, která byla těmito kmeny domestikována.
