The Dominican Priory of St. Michael on the Fish market in Brno. History and construction history from 13th until the mid-17th century in the context of Central Europe

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce bylo vyhodnocení poznatků získaných při archeologických výzkumech a stavebně historických průzkumech někdejšího dominikánského konventu sv. Michala v Brně. Brněnský řádový dům vznikl mezi léty 1227 až 1238 za podpory markraběte Přemysla a během středověku se stal jednou z nejvýznamnějších církevních institucí ve městě, podporovanou ze stran šlechty i měšťanstva. V rámci práce byla shrnuta jeho historie a stavební vývoj do poloviny 17. století, kdy byla zahájena výstavba nového barokního kláštera. Podstatná část práce se zabývá vznikem prostorové dispozice středověké klauzury a kostela v kontextu další středověkých konventů ve středovýchodní Evropě. V závěru je interpretováno její funkční rozvržení pro 1. polovinu 14. století.

Abstract:

This work sets out to assess information acquired during archaeological and building-historical research into the former Dominican Priory of St. Michael in Brno. The Priory was established between the years 1228 and 1239 with the support of Margrave Přemysl, and in the Middle Ages went on to become one of the leading religious institutions in the city, supported by both the aristocracy and burghers. The work summarizes the history and building development of the convent until the mid-17th century when the construction of a new baroque monastery was launched. A substantial part of the article is devoted to the origin of the spatial layout of the medieval Priory and church in the context of further medieval convents in Central and eastern Europe. The final section interprets the functional layout of the building in the first half of the 14th century.
