Kazuo Ishiguro: The Matter of Dignity

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of human dignity in the novels An Artist of the Floating World and The Remains of the Day by the prominent contemporary British author, Kazuo Ishiguro. This multifaceted subject, which represents one of the main themes of both these novels, will be explored through an analysis of the fates of the main protagonists, Japanese propaganda painter Masuji Ono and British butler Mr Stevens, each of whom is forced to reconcile themselves with the fact that they have wasted their lives. The analysis is based on the author's own philosophical contemplations and psychological theories, as expressed by him during a number of interviews. The thesis also seeks to examine the metaphoric dimension of Ishiguro?s work and to reveal the extent to which each of the protagonists can be a reflection of the reader.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou lidské důstojnosti v románech Malíř pomíjivého světa (An Artist of the Floating World) a Soumrak dne (The Remains of the Day) předního současného britského autora Kazua Ishigura. Tento obtížně definovatelný problém, který představuje jedno z hlavních témat obou zmíněných románů, bude zkoumán prostřednictvím analýzy životních osudů dvou hlavních představitelů, japonského propagandistického malíře Masudžiho Ona a britského majordoma pana Stevense, kteří jsou nuceni smířit se se skutečností, že promarnili svůj život. Analýza se opírá o autorovy vlastní filozofické úvahy a psychologické teorie, které sám otevřeně prezentoval v několika ze svých četných rozhovorů. Cílem práce je zároveň poukázat na metaforický rozměr Ishigurova díla a odhalit, do jaké míry mohu být oba protagonisté obrazem každého z nás.
