A discourse and translation analysis of pop culture references in Netflix series 'Lucifer'

Abstract:

This master thesis is concerned with intertextual and translation analysis of pop culture references in Netflix series Lucifer and consists of the theoretical and analytical part. After outlining the key concepts of intertextuality, the focus is shifted to the field of audiovisual translation and translation strategies. The aim of the thesis is to map implementation of pop culture references in the series and to analyze the translation strategies of such expressions, applying the methodologies described in the theoretical part. Therefore, the analytical part falls into two separate sections, one investigating the linkage between intertextual references and the source they draw on, and the other focuses on transferring pop culture references into the Czech language.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na intertextuální a překladatelskou analýzu odkazů na pop kulturu v seriálu Lucifer na Netflixu, sestávajíc z teoretické a praktické části. V práci jsou nejprve nastíněny zásadní pojetí intertextuality, následně se věnuje oblasti audiovizuálního překladu a překladatelským strategiím. Cílem práce je zmapovat, jakým způsobem jsou popkulturní odkazy do seriálu zakomponovány, a zanalyzovat překladatelské strategie těchto výrazů za využití metodologií, jež jsou popsány v teoretické části. Analytická část je proto rozdělena do dvou samostatných sekcí, přičemž jedna zkoumá vazbu mezi intertextovými odkazy a zdrojem, ze kterého tyto odkazy čerpají, a druhá se zaměřuje na převod popkulturních odkazů do češtiny.
