John Irving's Literary Debt to Charles Dickens

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá hledáním a rozkrýváním podobností mezi vybranými díly Johna Irvinga a Charlese Dickense. John Irving se odjakživa bez rozpaků přiznává jak k obdivu vůči Charlesi Dickensovi a jeho práci, tak také k určitému literárnímu dluhu, který vůči Dickensovi jako spisovatel má. Úvodní část této práce má za cíl shrnout základní/obecnější společné rysy práce obou autorů a odhalit rozsah zmíněného literárního dluhu, na což navazuje druhá kapitola, která se už soustředí spíše na konkrétnější odkazy na Dickense, a to v rámci dvou Irvingových novel - Pravidla moštárny a Modlitba za Owena Meanyho. Třetí kapitola pak detailněji analyzuje jedno společné téma, které z jejich novel vystupuje nejvýrazněji - téma dětí, dětského pohledu na svět, různých podob, které na sebe bere rodina, funkčností vztahů a rolí institucí v celém procesu dospívání. Poslední, čtvrtá kapitola, se zabývá dalším výrazným společným rysem, kterým je humor a poukazuje na dva klíčové nástroje, které najdeme v dílech obou autorů - použití humorných popisů a trefné pojmenovávání postav, což celou práci uzavírá.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with searching for and exploring of resemblance within selection of John Irving´s and Charles Dickens´s novels. John Irving has never made any secret of his admiration towards Dickens and his work, and he has always confessed to a certain literary debt he owes to Dickens. The aim of the opening part of this thesis is to summarize the main common features of the work of both writers and to reveal the scope of the above mentioned indebtedness. The following, second chapter then focuses rather on the more concrete references to Dickens within two Irving´s novels - The Cider House Rules and A Prayer for Owen Meany. The third chapter analyses in greater detail one conspicuous theme, common to both writers - the theme of children, their view of the world, different forms of family, functionality of family relationships and the role of institutions in the process of becoming an adult. The final chapter deals with another common feature - comical descriptions and choice of funny characters' names.
