Differences and similarities between selected original North American comics and their Czech translations

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá srovnáním podobností a rozdílů do češtiny přeložených komiksů s originály ze Severní Ameriky (USA, Kanada). Vybrané komiksy jsou srovnávány v délce překladu, formátu vydaného překladu, kulturních a textových přenosech a změnách, lokalizaci jmen a přezdívek, výskytu neologismů či kulturních vysvětlivek, a nakonec v úpravě znaků či piktogramů. Primárním cílem této práce je na daných hypotézách ukázat, že česká a severoamerická kultura jsou si velmi podobné, a že český překlad a lokalizace komiksů, navzdory častým pochybnostem, je na vysoké úrovni.

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the similarities and differences of comics translated into Czech with the originals from North America (USA, Canada). The chosen comics are compared in the translation length, format, cultural and textual transfers and changes, localisation of names and nicknames, the presence of neologisms or cultural explanations, and finally adaptation of characters or pictograms. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that Czech and North American cultures are very similar, and that the Czech translation and localisation of comics, despite common doubts, is high-quality.
