Diplomová práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První poskytuje životopisné informace. Druha část prozkoumává zdroje inspirace, ze kterých Carverovo dílo čerpá. Je to především výzkum týkající se jeho předchůdců, ačkoli důležité osobnosti z jeho života jsou taktéž zmíněny.
