Art and aesthetics as a means of social change

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou moderního umění z hlediska estetiky v kontextu změn ve společnosti 20. století. Otázka, zda může moderní umění přetrvat v kapitalistické společnosti a zda toto umění může přispět k transformaci této společnosti, tvoří jádro práce a zároveň vychází z myšlenek Theodora W. Adorna, jenž je neodmyslitelně spjat s Frankfurtskou školou. V rámci zkoumání souvislostí mezi uměním a kapitalistickým světem v Adornových dílech je část práce věnována Frankfurtské škole. Dále pak jsou podrobněji rozebírány Adornovy reflexe umění, ve kterých se nachází odpověď na otázku, zda lze umění považovat za prostředek společenské změny.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the problems of modern art in terms of aesthetics in the context of changes in the society of the 20th century. The question of whether modern art can survive in a capitalist society and if this art can contribute to the transformation of this society, forms the core of this thesis and is also based on the ideas of Theodor W. Adorno, who is associated with the Frankfurt School. The subjekt of research of the relationships between art and the capitalistic world in Adorno’s works are part of the thesis devoted to the Frankfurt School. In the next section will be explored Adorno's reflection on art. In this reflection he finds the answers to the question of whether art can be considered as a means of social change.
