Rilke and Kafka between Bavaria and Bohemia

Abstract:

The topic of this master thesis is Rilke and Kafka between Bavaria and Bohemia. They are authors of worldwide significance who were born in Prague, with which they are also often associated. The aim of the thesis is to describe their connections to Munich or to Bavaria as a whole. Munich, which was the cultural centre of Central Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries, is first introduced. The chapter then goes on to describe the cultural situation in this city. This is followed by a brief description of the cultural situation in Vienna and a brief comparison of Munich and Vienna as two cultural centres. Next, the thesis focuses on mapping the two authors' stays in Munich; Rilke and Kafka are each given a separate chapter for the sake of clarity. The practical part of the thesis deals with a comparison of the two authors' activities in the Bavarian capital, on four levels: the length of their stay, the contacts they acquired with the Munich cultural scene, their work during the period in which they stayed in Munich, and their overall relationship to Munich or Bavaria in general. The practical part also includes a proposal for a cultural-literary excursion to Munich, which was designed for Czech tourists. Photographs of the places visited by the author in Munich were included in the appendices. These are places that are related to the topic of the thesis and some of the locations are also stops in the proposed excursion. The appendices also include a map showing the route of the excursion.

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je Rilke a Kafka mezi Bavorskem a Čechami. Jedná se o autory celosvětového významu, kteří se narodili v Praze, se kterou jsou také často spojováni. Cílem práce je popsání jejich vazeb na Mnichov, popřípadě celé Bavorsko. Nejdříve je představen Mnichov, který byl v 19. a na počátku 20. století kulturním centrem střední Evropy. Kapitola se zabývá popsáním kulturní situace v tomto městě. Poté následuje krátké popsání kulturní situace ve Vídni a stručné porovnání Mnichova a Vídně jako dvou kulturních center. Dále se práce zaměřuje na zmapování pobytů obou autorů v Mnichově; Rilkemu a Kafkovi je každému pro lepší přehlednost věnovaná samostatná kapitola. Praktická část práce se zabývá porovnáním působení obou autorů v bavorské metropoli, a to na čtyřech rovinách: délka pobytu, získané kontakty na mnichovskou kulturní scénu, tvorba v období, kdy v Mnichově pobývali a jejich celkový vztah k Mnichovu, popřípadě celkově k Bavorsku. Praktická část také obsahuje návrh kulturně-literární exkurze do Mnichova, která byla navržena pro české turisty. Do příloh byly vloženy fotografie míst, které autorka v Mnichově navštívila. Jedná se o místa, která jsou spojená s tématem práce a některé lokality jsou zároveň i zastávkami v navržené exkurzi. Přílohy také obsahují mapku s vyznačenou trasou exkurze.
