Archaeological transformation processes in urban environment

Abstract:

Dizertační práce se zabývá archeologickými transformacemi v prostředí středověkých měst z hlediska poznání formačních a postdepozičních procesů, které se podílely na utváření městských stratigrafií a ovlivňovaly i strukturu archeologických kontextů. Studium formačních a postdepozičních procesů vychází z teorií odpadových areálů středověkých měst, které jsou řešeny na příkladu studia středověké keramiky ve vztahu k jejímu nálezovému prostředí. Na základě vzájemných duálních vztahů založených na studiu interakcí a korelací mezi středověkou keramikou a archeologickými kontexty jsou hledány vzájemné vzorce a struktury, které směřují k širším sociálně-ekonomickým a behaviorálním intepretacím, mezi něž patří například poznání mechanismů zacházení s odpadem, dynamiky stratigrafického vývoje nebo biografie a funkční diferenciace archeologických objektů (kontextů) ve specifickém městském prostředí. Nástin modelu formačních a postdepozičních procesů probíhajících v rámci odpadových areálů byl testován na příkladu rozboru středověké keramiky 13. - 15. století, které pocházela ze dvou původních středověkých městských parcel A a B na dvoře radnice v Českých Budějovicích na náměstí Přemysla Otakara II. čp. 1.

Abstract:

This PhD thesis is focused on archaeological transformation process in urban environment of High Middle Age towns in the 13th - 15th century in terms of study of formation and postdepositional processes that were involved in creating and forming urban stratigraphy and structures of archaeological contexts. The study of formation and postdepositional processes is based on the theories of site formation processes and refuse management in the medieval towns, which are solved through the study of medieval pottery distribution and relation to its context. Mutual patterns and structures that are leading to broader socio-economic and behavioral interpretations at this close dual relationships based on the study of interactions and correlations between medieval pottery and archaeological context are sought, which includes the knowledge of mechanism of municipal refuse handling, dynamic of depositional processes (adding layers, cutting features etc.) or biography and functional differentiation of archaeological objects (contexts) in urban-built environment. Outline of the model of formation and postdepositional process in urban stratigraphy was tested on the case study of the analysis of medieval pottery from the 13th - 15th century from two original medieval town plots A and B in the court of a nowadays town hall on the square of Premysl Otakar II. in České Budějovice.
