Cartographic methods to visual exploration of multivariate data: Ring maps - use possibilities

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá problematikou určování použitelnosti nových metod kartografické vizualizace v porovnání s konvenčními, již běžně používanými postupy. Novou testovanou metodou jsou prstencové mapy, které slouží pro zobrazení vícerozměrných geografických dat a prezentování velkého množství geografických informací. Cílem práce je podpořit paradigma kartografie jako metody explorace; prezentovat mapu v podobě nástroje dolování dat; rozšířit nabídku metod kartografické vizualizace a ověřit možnosti využití prstencových map a jiných běžně užívaných metod pro prezentaci složitějších situací. Těchto cílů bylo v práci dosaženo prostřednictvím analýzy možností kartografické vizualizace Big Data v kartografii a realizací rozsáhlého smíšeného výzkumu testování použitelnosti na celkem 258 respondentech. Porovnávanými metodami byly prstencové mapy, série kartogramů a kartodiagramy. Výsledky kvalitativních a kvantitativních testů potvrdily vysoký předpoklad použitelnosti prstencových map, prací s nimi respondenti dosahovali shodných výsledků, jako s dalšími uvedenými metodami. Prstencové mapy jsou tak vhodným nástrojem pro prezentování rozsáhlých datových souborů, exploraci uvedených dat a získávání relevantních informací a jako nástroj pro zvýšení relevantnosti a spolehlivosti závěrů rozhodování, například v rámci krizového řízení. Novost a přínos výzkumu je tak možné identifikovat především v doložení schopnosti uživatelů map posuzovat komplexnější informace zakódované ve složitějších kartografických vizualizacích. Což dává nový význam běžně přijímaným kartografickým teoriím. Uvedený výzkum je možné dále rozšířit o možnosti vývoje vhodného nástroje pro tvorbu prstencových map, další podrobný výzkum v oblasti vnitřních a vnějších grafických proměnných a zrcadla mapy prstencových map, dále v oblasti standardizace určování použitelnosti kartografických produktů a změny kurikul na základních a středních školách.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis deals with the determination of usability of new methods of cartographic visualization compared to conventional ones already used. A new test method is ring maps that serve to display multidimensional geographic data and to present a large amount of geographic information. The aim of the thesis is to support the paradigm of cartography as a method of exploration; Present a map in the form of a data mining tool; expand the range of cartographic visualization methods and verify the use of ring maps and other commonly used methods for presenting more complex situations. These goals were achieved through the analysis of the cartographic visualization capabilities of Big Data in cartography and the implementation of large-scale, collaborative usability research on 258 respondents. Comparable methods were ring maps, a series of choropleth maps (small multiples) and diagram maps. The results of the qualitative and quantitative tests confirmed the high assumption of the applicability of the ring maps, with the respondents achieving the same results as the other methods mentioned. Ring maps are thus an appropriate tool for presenting large data sets, exploring the data and obtaining relevant information, and as a tool to increase the relevancy and reliability of decision conclusions, for example, in crisis management. The novelty and benefits of research can thus be identified primarily by demonstrating the ability of map users to evaluate complex information encoded in more complex cartographic visualizations. This gives new meaning to commonly accepted cartographic theories. The research can be further extended with the possibility of developing a suitable tool for creating ring maps, further detailed research in the field of internal and external graphic variables and the ring maps layout, as well as in the area of standardization of determination of cartographic products usability and change of curricula at elementary and secondary schools.
