Why do students of English teaching not want to be teachers?

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá studenty učitelství anglického jazyka, kteří se nechtějí stát učiteli po obdržení diplomu. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaké důvody tito studenti magisterského programu učitelství anglického jazyka považují za nepřekonatelné. Teoretická část práce představuje, kromě procesu přípravného vzdělávání učitelů, také problém nedostatku učitelů v České republice a nejčastější důvody jejich odchodu ze školství. Tyto důvody jsou porovnány se zjištěními prezentovanými v praktické části práce. Data byla získána pomocí rozhovoru se šesti studenty magisterského studia učitelství anglického jazyka, kteří vyslovili svůj záměr nepokračovat v učitelství po ukončení studia. Analýza jejich odpovědí ukazuje, že většina studentů učitelství nepociťuje vztah k učení. Po chybějícím pocitu naplnění z učení následovala nespokojenost s učitelským platem a vysokou psychickou zátěží, kterou učitelská profese obnáší. Zdlouhavé plánování výuky a nízká prestiž profese byly také zmíněny. Učitelská praxe se ukázala být klíčovou v rozhodování studentů, jelikož pomohla polovině účastníků uvědomit si, že se učiteli stát nechtějí. Druhá polovina to věděla už před nástupem na magisterské studium, ale považovala titul z učitelství za praktický. Ani jeden z dotázaných však nevyloučil možnost vrátit se k učení v budoucnosti, pokud by nebyl schopný najít si práci v jiné sféře.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on English teacher trainees who are not interested in pursuing a career in teaching after their graduation. The aim of the research was to identify the reasons that these master’s students of English teaching programs consider too problematic to overcome. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces, beside the education process of pre-service teachers, the problem of teacher shortage in the Czech Republic and the most frequent reasons for their dropout. These reasons are compared with the findings presented in the practical part of the thesis. The data were collected with the help of an interview with six master’s degree students of English teaching programs who expressed their intention not to continue teaching once graduated. The analysis of the answers shows that the majority of the teacher trainees lack passion for teaching. The missing professional fulfillment was closely followed by the dissatisfaction with teachers’ salary and the stressfulness of the profession. Time-consuming lesson planning and low prestige of the profession were mentioned as well. Teaching practice turned out to play an important role in the decision-making process, since it helped one half of the participants realize that they do not want to become professional teachers. The second half knew it before starting the master’s program but considered the degree useful. None of the participants ruled out the possibility of teaching in the future, in case they are not able to find an employment in another field.
