Empathy and machiavelismus in high school students

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zpracování teoretického pojednání o problematice empatie a machiavelismu, historické pojetí, zařazení fenoménů do teoretického rámce. Empatie bývá považována za rys osobnosti, který brání machiavelistickému chování. Empatie je propojena s kompetencí člověka porozumět druhým lidem, komunikovat s nimi a reagovat v sociálních situacích. Machiavelismus bývá popisován zejména jako manipulativní chování. Výsledky jsme získali na základě realizace empirického výzkumu u středoškolských studentů. Účastnilo se 238 středoškolských studentů prvních a druhých ročníků, v rámci jedné střední školy. Cílem empirického výzkumu, bylo zjistit vztahy mezi empatií, machiavelismem a celkovou spokojeností. Použitými metodami byly Kvocient empatizace (EQ), Škála machiavelistické osobnosti (MPS) a dotazník vlastní konstrukce zjišťující spokojenost studentů v různých oblastech života. Statisticky významné korelace se ukázaly mezi spokojeností a empatií (0,171), také mezi spokojeností a machiavelismem (-0,367). Machiavelismus a empatie signifikantně korelovaly pouze v jediném znaku machiavelismu, a to amorálnosti (-0,178). Tyto výsledky jsou interpretovány s oporou v teoretických východiscích.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to elaborate a theoretical treatise on the issue of empathy and machiavelism, historical conception, inclusion of phenomena into the theoretical framework. Empathy is seen as a feature of personality that prevents Machiavellian behaviour. Empathy is linked to a person's competence to understand, interact with, and react in social situations. Machiavelism is mainly described as manipulative behaviour. The results were obtained on the basis of empirical research at secondary school students. Participated 238 high school students of the first and second grades from one high school. The aim of the empirical research was to find out the relationships between empathy, machiavelism and overall satisfaction. The methods used were the Empatization Quotient (EQ), the Machiavellian Personality Scale (MPS), and the own design questionnaire to determine student satisfaction in different areas of life. Statistically significant correlations were found between satisfaction and empathy (0.171), as well as satisfaction and machiavelism (-0.367). Machiavelism and empathy significantly correlated only in the single sign of Machiavelism, namely amorality (-0,178). These results are interpreted with support in theoretical background.
