Graded Readers as a Source for Vocabulary Acquisition and Language Development

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je posoudit vhodnost zjednodušené četby k výuce anglického jazyka s důrazem na akvizici aktivní slovní zásoby a rozvinutí celkové znalosti jazyka. Pozitivní účinky extenzivního čtení byly prokázany mnoha studiemi, nicméně existuje několik výtek vůči malé autenticitě a nedostatečné frekvenci opakování slovní zásoby pro její následnou akvizici. Autorka ve své práci dokazuje pomoci analýzy textu, že ve zjednodušených textech je dostatečná míra syntakticity, přispívající k větší autenticitě. Jako velmi vhodnou aktivitu následující čtení doporučuje autorka učební metodu DDL (data driven learning), jež se dá použít zejména jako východisko pro akvizici slovní zásoby. Při práci s korpusem student hledá kolokace a koligace, které v sobě nesou obsažené gramatické vzorce a sám se stává vědcem, což přispívá k posílení jeho autonomity.

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to consider the suitability of Graded reading for teaching English with the main focus on active vocabulary acquisition and improvement in the overall level of English. Positive effects of extensive reading through the use of Graded readers have been shown in many studies, nevertheless there are still some objections regarding authenticity and insufficient frequency of repetition for its consequent acquisition. The thesis shows via analysis of text that even in simplified texts there is a sufficient level of syntacticity, which contributes to its authenticity. The thesis recommends using DDL (data driven learning) as a very suitable follow-up activity, which is particularly effective for acquisition of vocabulary. Through working with corpus students search for collocations and colligations, which inherently contain grammar and thus the learner becomes a researcher, which supports his/her autonomy.
