Physics and modeling of Hall thrusters

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je vyvinout 1D fluidní numerický model, který by popisoval činnost Hallova motoru s nízkofrekvenčními ionizačními oscilacemi. Nejprve Hallův motor porovnáme s jinými typy pohonů a v rámci stručného vhledu do jeho problematiky představíme rovnice, kterými se jeho činnost pokusíme simulovat. Značná pozornost pak bude věnována numerickému schématu použitému k řešení těchto rovnic. Toto numerické schéma otestujeme dvěma benchmarky. Na závěr představíme numerické výsledky s parametry odpovídajícími Hallovu motoru SPT-100.

Abstract:

The main objective of this thesis is to develop 1D fluid numerical model that describes how Hall thrusters work with focus on low frequency ionization oscillations. In the beginning Hall thrusters will be compared with other types of propulsion devices. As a part of a brief insight into the Hall thruster physics, equations governing their operation will be also presented. A significant amount of attention is then dedicated to a numerical scheme used to solve these equations. This numerical scheme is tested using a couple of benchmarks. Finally, the numerical results are presented with parameters matching those of the SPT-100 Hall thruster.
