Mythical Creatures In Shakespeare´s Works: A Midsummer Night´s Dream And The Tempest

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to list the characters of Shakespeare´s plays, that have some supernatural traits and to explore their character and appearance as well as their abilities in comparism to other myths and legends. The thesis is divided into three basic parts. The first one deals with A Midsummer Night´s Dream and its respective magical characters: Titania, Oberon, Puck, Hippolita and the fairies. A short comparism of Roger Zelazny´s The Chronicles of Amber to the play and a brief summary of the movie adaptations is also included. The second part focuses on The Tempest and its protagonists: Prospero, Ariel, Sycorax, Caliban and naiads, followed by a short review of the latest movie adaptation. The third part consists of elements of sorcery and myths in other Shakespeare´s plays - The Winter´s Tale, Hamlet and Macbeth.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá mýtickými bytostmi v Shakespearových dílech. Je zaměřená zejména na Sen noci svatojánské a Bouři. Rozebírá ty hrdiny her, kteří mají nějaké nadpřirozené schopnosti nebo znaky z hlediska jejich charakteru a podobností s jinými mýty. Práce se dělí na tři části. První se soustřeďuje na Sen noci svatojánské a postavy, které v něm figuruji: Titánie, Oberon, Puk, Hippolita a víly. Podává také stručné srovnání Snu noci svatojánské a Amberu od Rogera Zelazného a popisuje dvě z filmových adaptací Snu. Druhá část se zaobírá Bouří a jejími protagonisty: Prosperem, Arielem, Calibanem, Sycorax a najádami. Také obsahuje informace o nejnovějším filmovém zpracování. Třetí část se zabývá prvky magie v dalších Shakespearových dílech, konkrétně v Zimní pohádce, Hamletovi a Macbethovi.
