Pragmatic aspects of translation in House M.D. TV series

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to explore the role pragmatic aspects play in audiovisual translation. The work concentrates on those pragmatic meanings which are realised differently in the original and translated text. Firstly, the work presents the theoretical background of pragmatics and audiovisual translation. Thereafter, the corpus is specified. The corpus is a transcription of one randomly chosen episode of the American series House M.D. The work studies deixis, speech acts, the Cooperative Principle and the Politeness Principle. The theory and analysis of the individual aspects are joined. Speech acts are treated according to George Yule?s differentiation of the direct and indirect speech acts. The Cooperative Principle is based on H. P. Grice?s maxims. The Politeness Principle draws upon Geoffrey Leech?s methodology.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat roli, kterou pragmatické aspekty hrají v audiovizuálním překladu. Práce se zaměřuje na ty pragmatické významy, které jsou přeloženy jinak. Práce nejdříve popisuje teoretický základ pragmatiky a audiovizuálního překladu. Poté, je charakterizován korpus. Korpus tvoří přepis jednoho dílu seriálu Doktor House, který byl vybrán zcela náhodně. Práce zkoumá deixi, řečové akty, kooperativní a zdvořilostní princip. Teorie a analýza jednotlivých aspektů jsou spojeny. Řečové akty jsou prezentovány dle rozdělení George Yula na přímé a nepřímé řečové akty. Kooperativní princip vychází z jednotlivých maxim H. P. Grice. Zdvořilostní princip je analyzován na základě metodologie Geoffreyho Leeche.
