Automatic Parsing of Linux Commands Grammar and Contextual Information from Cybersecurity Training

Abstract:

To improve the quality of cybersecurity training on the KYPO platform, participants receive various types of feedback on their performance. Syntactic and semantic analysis of commands from the training allows generating this feedback. The analysis uses two inputs, namely the grammar of the commands to detect syntactic errors and the training settings to detect semantic errors. So far, these files have been created manually, and this thesis aims to automate their creation. To automate the grammar of commands, I parse the internet documentation of the BASH console and the Metasploit console using web scraping. I also automate the creation of training settings from the supplied training specification files. In this thesis, I partially automated the generation of both aspects: command grammars and training settings. Automatic parsing from the official documentation was problematic due to inconsistencies between commands. However, most of the information was extracted, which greatly simplified the creation of command grammars compared to fully manual creation. The training settings did not treat special cases that could not be extracted from the context. The created command grammars and training settings were used in an application to provide feedback to participants in cybersecurity training, which was created in parallel with this work.

Abstract:

Pre zlepšovanie kvality kyberbezpečnostných tréningov na platforme KYPO účastníci dostávajú rôzne typy spätnej väzby k ich výkonu. Syntaktická a sémantická analýza príkazov z tréningu umožňuje generovať túto spätnú väzbu. Analýza používa dva vstupy, konkrétne gramatiku použitých príkazov na odhalenie syntaktických chýb a nastavenie tréningu pre odhalenie sémantických chýb. Tieto súbory boli doteraz tvorené manuálne a cieľom tejto práce je tvorbu týchto súborov automatizovať. Na automatizáciu gramatiky príkazov parsujem internetové dokumentácie konzoly BASH a konzoly Metasploit pomocou web scrapingu. Ďalej automatizujem tvorbu nastavenia tréningu z dodaných súborov špecifikácie tréningu. V práci sa podarilo čiastočne automatizovať generovanie oboch aspektov: gramatík príkazov aj nastavenia tréningu. Z oficiálnych dokumentácií bolo automatické parsovanie problematické kvôli inkonzistenciám medzi príkazmi. Väčšinu informácií sa však podarilo sparsovať, čo značne zjednodušilo tvorbu gramatík príkazov oproti plne manuálnej tvorbe. V nastavení tréningu chýbalo ošetrenie špeciálnych prípadov, ktoré sa nedali z kontextu sparsovať. Vytvorené gramatiky príkazov a nastavenie tréningu boli použité v aplikácii na poskytovanie spätnej väzby účastníkom kyberbezpečnostných tréningov, ktorá vznikala paralelne s touto prácou.
