Language of the Internet: Positive Politeness Strategies Claiming Common Ground in Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá analýzou jazyka různých online komunit komunikujících prostřednictvím internetových diskusních fór věnovaných tzv. ženským tématům (dieta, neplodnost, těhotenství, mateřství, atd.). Nejprve zkoumá, nakolik se tato asynchronní počítačem řízená komunikace podobá mluvené řeči a psanému projevu, a zároveň popisuje, jak mluvčí překonávají fakt, že komunikace neprobíhá simultánně a má vícero adresátů. Dále se práce věnuje pozitivně zdvořilostním strategiím v těchto fórech. Teoretický rámec pro převážně sociopragmatickou analýzu korpusu tvoří především zdvořilostní teorie Brownové a Levinsona (1978, 1987) a Leeche (1983, 2014) a dále teorie řečových aktů (Austin 1971 a Searle 1969). Pomocí pozitivně zdvořilostních strategií (kompliment, souhlas, gratulace, vyjádření soustrasti, přání všeho dobrého a tzv. in-group jazyka) se uživatelky snaží překonat nebo zmírnit tváře ohrožující jednání (FTA), která vyplývají z citlivého kontextu daných fór (jako např. selhání při dietě, neschopnost otěhotnět, rodičovské problémy, atd.) Mnohem důležitější však je, že se uživatelky nejen snaží zmírnit tato tvář ohrožující jednání, ale především usilují o posílení tváře (face enhancement) ostatních členek fóra. Výrazným znakem všech zkoumaných komunit jsou solidarita, vzájemnost a společný základ (common ground), třebaže se jednotlivá vyjádření těchto strategií v rámci komunit více či méně liší.

Abstract:

The present dissertation deals with the language of online communities based on Internet discussion fora dedicated to 'women's' topics, such as dieting, infertility, pregnancy and mothering. First, it examines to what extent their communication resembles face-to-face communication and writing (Crystal and Davy 1969, Vachek 1973, Halliday 1989, Leech and Svartvik 1994, December 1996, Crystal 2001, etc.), describing how interlocutors overcome the fact that they communicate non-simultaneously and there are multiple addressees involved. Second, the dissertation deals with positive politeness strategies in these fora. The theoretical framework is based on politeness theories by Brown and Levinson (1978, 1987) and Leech (1983, 2014) and the speech act theory (Austin 1971, Searle 1969). Via the following positive politeness strategies, i.e. complimenting, agreement, congratulations, commiserations, well-wishes and claiming in-group language, the predominantly female users try to overcome or mitigate face-threatening acts caused by the sensitive topics (fear of infertility, inability to conceive, failing to keep a diet, etc.). However, more importantly, they want to enhance each other's face in order to promote solidarity, mutuality and assert common ground, even though there are some differences among the particular communities.
