Cross-cultural comparison of prevalence of low back pain among nursing professionals in the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom

Abstract:

PhDr. Andrea Pokorná, Ph.D Cíl: Cílem studie bylo popsat mezikulturní rozdíly v prevalenci bolestí dolní části zad (LBP) a jiných bolestí zad v souvislosti s použitím polohovacích pomůcek a ergonomie u souboru všeobecných sester v přímé péči v České republice a Velké Británii. Metodika:Kvantitativní, komparativní, prospektivní dotazníková studie byla provedena elektronickou formou prostřednictvím rozšířené verze standardizovaného Severského muskuloskeletálního dotazníku a originálního dotazníkového formuláře (celkem 42 položek). Data byla analyzována pomocí STATA 15 na hladině významnosti 0,05. Výsledky: Statistická analýza byla provedena z 1 043 (100 %) dotazníkových formulářů (n = 569 z ČR; n = 474 z VB). Byly zjištěny statisticky významné rozdíly prevalence LBP mezi respondenty obou zemí (ČR 93 % a VB 85 %) za období 12 měsíců (p = 0,0000). Všeobecné sestry z obou zemí uváděly vyšší výskyt LBP než v oblasti krku, ramenou nebo horní části zad. Potvrzeno bylo, že deklarovaný výskyt LBP souvisí s věkem respondentů, délkou praxe, BMI a vysokoškolským vzdělaním (VŠ Bc.). Vztah LBP a čerpání pracovní neschopnosti byl potvrzen pouze u souboru sester z VB (p = 0,0498). Ověřen byl vztah (p = 0,002) mezi používáním polohovacích pomůcek a LBP u sester z ČR. Dostatek pomůcek se prokázal jako pozitivní (p = 0,0268) v nižší prevalenci LBP u sester z VB. Závěr: Výsledky studie potvrzují, že LBP je častým zdravotním problémem u profese všeobecných sester v přímé péči o pacienty. Zjištěny byly nedostatky v dodržování zásad bezpečnosti a ochrany zdraví při práci s dopadem na výskyt LBP u souboru všeobecných sester v ČR.

PhDr. Andrea Pokorná, Ph.D. Objectives: The study was designed to analyze cross-cultural differences in the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and other back pain in relation to the use of positioning aids and ergonomics in the population of general nurses in direct service in the Czech Republic and Great Britain. Methods: A quantitative, comparative, prospective questionnaire survey was performed in an electronic form using an extended version of the standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and an original questionnaire form (42 questions in total). The data was analyzed by means of STATA 15 using a significance level of 0.05. Results: The statistical analysis was based on 1,043 (100 %) questionnaire forms (n = 569 from the CR; n = 474 from GB). We have identified statistically significant differences in the LBP prevalence among the respondents in both countries (93 % in the CR and 85 % in GB) in the period of 12 months (p = 0.0000). General nurses from both countries stated a higher prevalence of LBP compared to pains in the area of neck, shoulders or higher back. The study has confirmed that the declared LBP occurrence is related to the respondents' age, length of employment, BMI and higher education (Bachelor's degree). The relationship between LBP and taking sick leave was only confirmed in the population of nurses from GB (p = 0.0498). We have verified a relationship (p = 0.002) between the use of positioning aids and LBP in nurses from the CR. The sufficient amount of aids was shown a positive factor (p = 0.0268) in a lower LBP prevalence in nurses from GB. Conclusion: The results of the study confirm that LBP is a frequent health issue in the profession of general nurses working in the direct care of patients. We have found insufficiencies in observing the principles of health and safety at work, which result in a higher LBP prevalence in the population of general nurses in the CR.
