Translation as the Fifth Language Skill in Czech Secondary Education: A Case Study

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá rolí pedagogického překladu v dnešní výuce jazyků. Cílem práce je podat přehled o postavení překladu na českých středních školách, zjistit zda a do jaké míry univerzity, které nabízí učitelské programy, připravují své studenty na výuku překladu a zda jsou učitelé kompetentní k opravám studentských překladů. V rámci výzkumu proběhla analýza povinných a volitelných předmětů na vysokých školách, byly navštíveny vyučovací hodiny učitelů a proběhly rozhovory s nimi. Nakonec byli učitelé požádání o ohodnocení studentských překladů. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že na českých vysokých školách není dostatečná nabídka překladatelských kurzů pro studenty učitelství a hodnotit studentské překlady dokáží pouze učitelé, kteří po dokončení vysokoškolského studia absolvují další překladové či metodologické kurzy.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the role of pedagogical translation in today’s language teaching. The aim of the thesis is to provide an overview of the role of translation in Czech secondary education, to see whether and to which extent Czech universities offering teacher training programmes train their students in translation, and to evaluate teachers’ aptitude to teach translation as the fifth language skill. An analysis of lists of compulsory and optional subjects at all Czech universities offering teacher training programmes was carried out and teachers at one secondary school were interviewed, had their lessons observed and were asked to evaluate students’ translations. The research shows that universities do not provide sufficient training in translation during teacher training programmes and that only the teachers who have taken some translation or methodological courses after finishing their teacher training programmes are able to evaluate students’ translations.
