Application of gamma-ray spectrometry in provenance studies of siliciclastic sediments

Abstract:

Gamaspektrometrie je petrofyzikální metoda užívaná k měření přirozené radioaktivity a stanovení koncentrací K, U a Th v horninách. V siliciklastických sedimentech obecně reaguje na jejich minerální a chemické složení. Předkládaná práce se zabývá studiem hornin, interpretovaných jako hlubokomořské sedimenty gravitačních proudů a zkoumá vztahy mezi spektry gama záření, faciemi a minerálně-chemickým složením těchto siliciklastických sedimentů. Výsledkem je ověření využití gamaspektrometrického studia výchozů, jakožto jedné z metod korelace výchozů v celopánevním měřítku, sekvenčně-stratigrafických interpretací siliciklastických sedimentů a studia jejich provenience. Výzkum byl zaměřen na tři zájmové oblasti, které reprezentují předpolní pánve variského, karpatského a alpského orogenního systému (nízkojesenický kulm, slezská jednotka flyše Západních Karpat a souvrství Gres d´Annot v jv. Francii). Celkově bylo na 60 výchozech provedeno 2190 měření s rozestupy mezi jednotlivými měřenými body od 15 do 100 cm. Získaná data byla doplněna laboratorní gamaspektrometrií, optickou, katodoluminiscenční mikroskopií pískovců, analýzami na elektronové mikrosondě, analýzami asociací těžkých minerálů, RTG práškově difrakčními a fluorescenčními analýzami jílovců a analýzami obsahů celkového organického uhlíku. Nízká mineralogická zralost siliciklastických sedimentů se projevuje ve slabém kompozičním kontrastu mezi horninotvornými zrny, základní hmotou pískovců a jílovci. Výsledkem jsou relativně male rozdíly v radioaktivitě různých facií. Slabý vliv sedimentární recyklace a mechanického a chemického zvětrávání během transportu způsobil zachování nestabilních složek pískovců. Ve spektrálním záznamu gama záření mohou změny modálního složení pískovců imitovat změny faciální (zvláště v případě koncentrací K). Relativně nejvíce citlivé na faciální změny je Th. Vysoký kontrast mezi pískovci a jílovci ve spektrálních záznamech gama záření závisí na efektu naředění pískovců neradioaktivním křemenem, jak je vidět v hradecko-kyjovickém souvrství nízkojesenického kulmu a mazáckém souvrství slezské jednotky. Stratigraficky vázané změny v koncentracích K, U a Th jsou často vyšší než rozdíly na faciální úrovni. V případě nízkojesenického kulmu i flyše slezské jednotky se tyto stratigrafické změny kryjí se změnami hlavních detritických módů v pískovcích. Možné vysvětlení lze nalézt v provenienčních změnách v důsledku postupného odstřešení hlubších korových hornin ve zdrojové oblasti. Ve slezské jednotce by výrazné zvýšení koncentrací K, U a Th na hranici středních a svrchních vrstev godulských mohlo přispět ke stratigrafickému rozlišení těchto sedimentů v terénu. V souvrství Gres d´Annot byly zjištěny prostorové změny v asociacích těžkých minerálů a systematické rozdíly v koncentracích K a Th v proximálně-distálním směru depozičního systému Gres d´Annot. Avšak modální analýzy na tyto změny příliš nereagují. Naopak analýzy těžkých minerálů a gamaspektrometrie odhalují, že v distální části depozičního systému mohlo docházet ke smíšení materiálu z hlavního bodového zdroje při j. a jv. okraji depozičního systému (submarinní delta St. Antonin) a ze zdrojů při v. okraji pánve (masiv Dome de Barrot). Faciální analýzy a měření gama záření v dobře odkrytém souvrství Gres d´Annot dovoluje korelovat výchozy napříč pánví a sekvenčně-stratigrafické interpretace. ochu lze v distálních částech systému (subpánve (Grand Coyer a Trois Eveches) korelovat s výrazným faciálním posunem. V distální části (profil Chalufy) byly identifikovány dva cykly představující dvě depoziční sekvence, které zahrnují vertikálně retrogradující až agradující faciální sledy. Tato faciální architektura je doprovázená do nadloží zvyšujícími se trendy v hodnotách standardního gama záření, poměrů Th/K a koncentrací Th. Gamaspektrometrie, kombinovaná s pečlivými faciálními analýzami se osvědčila jako relativně citlivý indikátor důležitých sekvenčně-stratigrafických rozhraní, které je možné korelovat napříč depozičním systémem.

Abstract:

Gamma-ray spectrometry is petrophysical method used for measurement of natural radioactivity and assessment of K, U and Th concentrations in rocks. Radioactivity of siliciclastic sediments is generally controlled by mineral and chemical composition. This PhD thesis deals with the study of rocks interpreted as deep-water gravity flow sediments and investigates the relationships between their gamma-ray spectra, facies and mineral and chemical composition. The main objective is to check the application of outcrop gamma-ray spectrometry for basin-wide stratigraphic correlation, sequence-stratigraphic interpretations and studies of siliciclastic provenance. This research was focused on three areas representing the foreland basins of the Variscan, Carpathian and Alpine orogenic systems (Nízký Jeseník Culm, Silesian unit of the Western Carpathians flysch belt and the Gres d´Annot Formation of SE France). A total of 2190 outcrop gamma-ray measurements taken with vertical interval of 15 to 100 cm, were obtained from 60 sections. The obtained data were supplemented with laboratory gamma-ray spectrometric measurements, optical and cathodoluminescence microscopy of sandstones, WDX microprobe analyses, analyses of heavy-mineral associations, X-ray powder diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyses of mudstones and analyses of total organic carbon content. Low mineralogical maturity of the silicilastic sediments manifests itself in the low composition contrast between the framework grains and matrix of sandstones and the mudstones. This resulted in the relative low differences in radioactivity between different facies. Low degree of sediment recycling and mechanical and chemical weathering during transport led to preservation of unstable components in sandstones. Hence, variations in sandstone modal composition can mimic facies variation in the outcrop gamma-ray logs (especially K concentrations). Th is most sensitive to facies change. The high contrast between sandstones and mudstones on the gamma-ray logs depends on the increasing effect of dilution by non-radioactive quartz, as documented in the Hradec-Kyjovice Formation of the Nízký Jeseník Culm and Mazák Formation of the Silesian unit. However, large-scale stratigraphic changes of K, U and Th concentrations are usually more pronounced than the differences at the facies scale. These stratigraphical changes correlate with the changes in main detritic modes in sandstones of the Nízký Jeseník Culm and the Silesian unit. A possible explanation can be found in the provenance changes due to unroofing of structurally deeper crustal rocks in the source area. In the Silesian unit, a significant increase of K, U and Th concentrations at the boundary between Middle and Upper Godula beds can contribute to their stratigraphic identification in the field. Spatial changes in heavy mineral associations and systematic differences in K and Th concentrations were observed in proximal-to-distal direction of the Gres d´Annot deposition system but the modal analyses of sandstones do not show any significant variation. However, heavy mineral analyses and gamma-ray spectrometry reveal that material influx from the major point source situated near the S - SE margin of deposition system (Saint Antonin fan-delta) could have been supplied in the distal parts of basin by another sources situated at E margin of the depositional system (Dome de Barrot massif). Facies analysis and outcrop gamma-ray logs of the well-exposed Gres d´Annot Formation allow basin-scale outcrop correlations and sequence-stratigraphic interpretations. The significant erosional surface interpreted as type-I sequence boundary, overlain by mainly coarse-grained sediments, was identified in the proximal part of the depositional system (Saint Antonin and Annot subbasins). y), two cycles encompassing vertical retrogradation to aggradation of facies were identified and interpreted as two depositional sequences. This facies architecture is accompanied by upward increasing trends in standard gamma-ray values, Th/K ratios and Th concentrations. The gamma-ray spectrometry, coupled with careful facies analysis proves as a good indicator of significant sequence-stratigraphic boundaries, which could be correlated throughout the deposition system.
