Dynamic environmental capabilities in the construction industry market and their impact on strategy

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na zkoumání faktorů dynamiky prostředí v odvětví obchodu se stavebními materiály a jejich vliv na strategii. Cílem zkoumání je identifikovat a ověřit faktory, které mají z pohledu vybraných klíčových stakeholderů, největší vliv na tržní dynamiku a zároveň ověřit míru těchto vlivů. Pozornost je kladena na období mezi lety 2017 a 2023, kdy došlo k významné volatilitě cen způsobené externími faktory v podobě pandemie Covid-19, válce na Ukrajině a energetické krize, s důrazem na polystyren EPS. Práce hledá závislostní faktory, které měly za následek tuto volatilitu, a které jsou určeny pomocí kvantitativních metod a následně jsou podrobeny dalšímu ověřování pomocí kvalitativní metody polostrukturovaným rozhovorem se zástupci dotčených stran. Výsledkem této práce je potvrzení domněnky, která byla zformována v průběhu realizace výzkumů, že není v silách účastníků dodavatelského řetězce, ovlivňovat tržní prostředí, ale je možno se v něm lépe orientovat pomocí sledování zkoumaných faktorů, které prokázali velmi silnou závislost. Doporučení plynoucí z těchto výzkumů pro praktické využití, je strategické plánování se zahrnutím více faktorů, které zdánlivě nesouvisí s tržní situací. Účastník trhu, který zahrne do svého strategického plánování veškeré dohledatelné relevantní informace, a bude je schopen v co nejvíce reálném čase vyhodnotit a aplikovat do revizí svého strategického plánu, bude schopen získat konkurenční výhodu krátkodobého charakteru. Krize zmíněná v této studii změnila tržní prostředí a přidala do něj faktor v podobě včasné reakce na nepředvídatelné skutečnosti. Zároveň nás tato krize nuceně posunula do doby, kdy je nutno plně využívat informačních zdrojů a nikoli se spoléhat na retrospektivu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the research of the dynamic environmental capabilities in the construction industry market and their impact on strategy. The aim of the research is to identify and verify the factors that, from the perspective of selected key stakeholders, have the greatest influence on market dynamics and to verify the extent of these influences. Thesis is focused on the period between 2017 and 2023, when significant price volatility was caused by external factors in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and energy crisis, with a focus on specific material EPS polystyrene. The paper searches for dependency factors, that have resulted in this volatility, which are identified using quantitative methods and then further verified using a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews with representatives of the parties concerned. The result of this work is in the form of confirmation of the assumption which was formed in the course of the research, that there is no influence proved of supply chain actors to the market environment but it is still possible to better navigate it by monitoring the factors studied, which have shown a very strong dependency. Recommendations arising from this research for practical application is that strategic planning with the inclusion of multiple factors are seemingly unrelated to the market situation. A market participant who includes all traceable relevant information in its strategic planning and is able to evaluate it in as real time as possible and apply it to updates of its strategic plan will be able to gain competitive advantage in the short term. The crisis referred to in this study changed the market environment and added the factor of early response to unforeseen events. At the same time, this crisis has forced us into an era where we need to make full use of information sources rather than relying on hindsight and retrospective results.
