Mobility of metals and uranium in floodplain sediments of the river Ploučnice

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na kontaminaci nivních sedimentů řeky Ploučnice těžkými kovy (hlavně Pb, Zn) a uranem. Vzhledem k těžbě uranu v oblasti Stráže pod Ralskem a dalších průmyslových zdrojů (např. - zinkovna v Brništi) byly vybrány pro mapování kontaminace tři lokality v nivě Ploučnice a jedna v nivě jejího přítoku Panenského potoka. Pro hodnocení kontaminace bylo provedeno vzorkování nivních sedimentů a odebráno ručním vrtákem 30 hloubkových profilů (délka 1 až 2 m), které byly analyzovány pomocí rentgenové fluorescenční spektrometrie (XRF). Následně byly vybrány a vyhodnoceny vzorky sedimentů pro stanovení litogenního pozadí. Zjištěné koncentrace rizikových prvků byly normalizovány a byly z nich vypočteny lokální faktory nabohacení (LEF) k posouzení míry znečištění nezávislé na hrubosti sedimentu. Z výsledků je patrné nerovnoměrné uložení kontaminace, například koncentrace U v nivě Ploučnice se pohybuje v rozmezí 10 až 550 ppm. Sedimenty z nivy Panenského potoka jsme úspěšně datovali pomocí gama spektrometrie nuklidů 137Cs (Černobylská havárie) a 210Pb (atmosférický spad).

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on floodplain sediments contaminated by heavy metals of the Ploucnice River (mainly Pb, Zn) and uranium. Due to uranium mining in Straz pod Ralskem and other industrial sources (e.g. - zinc plating factory in Brniště) were selected for mapping contamination three sites in the floodplain Ploucnice and the Panenský Creek of its tributaries. To evaluate the contamination sampling was performed of floodplain sediments in 30 depth profiles (length 1 2 m) obtained by hand drill corer, which were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Subsequently unpolluted sediment samples were selected and local background was evaluated. The observed concentrations of risk elements have been normalised and local enrichment factors (LEF) are calculated from them to assess pollution levels independent of sediment coarseness. The results show uneven deposition of contamination, for example concentrations of U in the Ploučnice floodplain ranges from 10 to 550 ppm. Sediments from the floodplain of the Panenský creek were successfully dated using gamma spectrometry determination of nuclides 137Cs (Chernobyl accident) and 210Pb (atmospheric deposition).
