The representation of sickness: tuberculosis and the definition of "risk groups"

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývala reprezentacemi tuberkulózy a sociálními významy, které jsou jí jejich prostřednictvím připsány. Pozornost byla věnována třem typům zvýznamňování této nemoci, které byly rozlišeny na základě toho, jakou roli v nich tuberkulóza hraje (označované označující a záminka pro označení). Na příkladech reprezentací z 19. století jsem se snažila poukázat na konstruovanost sociálních významů připsaných nemoci v daném sociokulturním a historickém kontextu.Na základě vybraných pramenů práce ukazuje příklady reprezentací tuberkulózy, v nichž se můžeme setkat s definováním tzv. „rizikových skupin“, ke kterému dochází prostřednictvím takových praktik, jakými jsou kategorizace, stereotypizace a stigmatizace. Riziko zde může být chápáno jednak jako větší náchylnost ke zisku nemoci, ale také jako nebezpečí ztělesněné nemocným jedincem pro ostatní. Na procesech konceptualizace nemoci a vymezování se vůči ní v závislosti na jedincově biografii, pak sleduji udržování hranic jinakosti, v tomto případě určené „rizikovostí“. Práce čerpá z omezeného množství ilustračních materiálů, a tak závěry nejsou generalizovány a slouží jen jako ukázka toho, jak může být nemoc zvýznamňována.

Abstract:

This paper focused on the representation of tuberculosis and the social meanings that are ascribed through the process of representation. Attention was paid to three types of making meanings of this sickness that were distinguished according to the role played by tuberculosis in representation (signified, signifier and the pretext for signifying). Examples of the representation from 19th century show that social meanings of the sickness are produced in socio-cultural and historical context. Thanks to the chosen sources the paper shows the examples of the representation of tuberculosis in which we can find the definition of so-called “risk groups”. This definition is caused by such practices as categorization, stereotyping and stigmatizing. We can understand the term “risk” as the predisposition of becoming ill but also as the danger of ill people for others. The processes of conceptualization of sickness and delimitation show how the boundary between “us” and “the other” (i.e. "risky") is sustained. The sources used in this paper are limited and so is the conclusion that need not be generalized and serve only as an illustration of how can the social meanings of the sickness can be produced.
