Energy commodity trade: the interdependence conceptualization and research design

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zkoumáním vlivu interdependence obchodní výměny energetických komodit na intenzitu párového mezinárodního konfliktu (DYMID). Práce se sestává ze tří hlavních částí. V úvodní teoretické části je představena tzv. ´conflict-trade debate´, v jejímž rámci jsou identifikovány soupeřící hypotézy teorie liberálního míru. Stručně zmíněny jsou také komplementární vysvětlení teorie demokratického míru a konkurenční vysvětlení teorie hegemonické stability. Druhá část je konceptuální analýzou pojmů závislosti a interdependence; pozornost je zde věnována především rozlišení mezi zranitelností interdependence a citlivostí interdependence. V třetí části je na základě této konceptualizace za účelem ilustrativního testování zmíněných hypotéz zkonstruován kvantitativní model, stanovena je tedy operační definice energetické interdependence.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of influence of international trade with energy commodities (namely oil and gas) on the nature (conflictual/cooperative) of a given bilateral relation/dyad. The thesis consists of three main parts. Theoretical introduction to the ´conflict-trade debate´ is the first part. Theoretical part focuses on the theory of liberal peace and its competing hypothesis. The second part is conceptual analysis of dependence and interdependence. In the third part I developed a quantitative model, where the character of the trade relation is considered as an independent variable, and occurrence of conflict (on the basis of the data from Correlates of War project) as a dependent variable.
