Rescue station as a tool for the protection of the common squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris): A case study of the Pavlov rescue station

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou ochrany veverky obecné (Sciurus vulgaris) v podmínkách současné kulturní krajiny, která je výrazně ovlivněna činností člověka. Zaměřuje se především na roli záchranných stanic pro volně žijící živočichy v ochraně tohoto druhu. Cílem práce je analyzovat příčiny příjmu veverky obecné do záchranných stanic, zhodnotit úspěšnost její léčby a návratu do volné přírody a posoudit vliv lidské činnosti na tyto případy. Součástí práce je také vyhodnocení sezónnosti příjmů a shrnutí praktických zkušenosti pracovníků záchranných stanic s péčí o tento druh. Výsledky práce poukazují na hlavní faktory vedoucí k přijetí jedinců do záchranných stanic, včetně těch souvisejících s lidskou činností. Poznatky přispívají k lepšímu pochopení významu záchranných stanic v ochraně volně žijících živočichů a zároveň zdůrazňují důležitost ochrany populací veverky obecné před negativními vlivy lidské činnost

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the conservation of the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in the conditions of the current cultural landscape, that is strongly influenced by human activity. Special attention is given to the role of wildlife rescue centres in the protection of this species. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the causes of admission of red squirrels to rescue stations, evaluate the success rate of their treatment and return to the wild, and assess the impact of human activities on these cases. The thesis also looks at seasonal changes in the number of admissions and includes the practical experience of rescue centre staff. The results show the main factors leading to the admissions and injuries of individuals, including those related to human activities. The findings help to better understand the importance of rescue centres in wildlife conservation and highlight the importance of protection of red squirrel populations from negative human impacts.
