Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je popsat historické působení Hasana ibn Sabbáh a assassinů a zmapovat jeho vliv na současnou západní literaturu. První část práce se zabývá Hasanem jako historickou osobností. Pokouším se zde nastínit širší historický rámec, ve kterém docházelo k dalšímu štěpení ší‘itské větve islámu a Hasanovy role v tomto procesu. Hasan zde figuruje jako silná vůdčí osobnost nizáríjské větve ismá‘ílíje a stojí za několika významnými doktrinálními a politickými inovacemi. Ve druhé části práce se snažím postihnout reakce, které působení Hasana a assassinů vyvolalo u jejich sunnitských a křesťanských současníků. Ti ve snaze vyrovnat se s jejich existencí a porozumět jejich metodám vyvíjeli snahu je mocensky potírat a ideologicky marginalizovat. Výsledkem těchto snah byla krystalizace fantaskních legend, které se rozšířily v rámci islámské kultury i na Západě, kde byly dlouho považovány za pravdivý obraz assassinů. Assassinské legendy na Západě přispěly k vytvoření celkového způsobu vnímání islámu jako nebezpečného a falešného náboženství, v tomto ohledu se otiskly rovněž do dobové literatury a přispěly též k deformacím, kterých se dopouštěli badatelé v počáteční fázi vědeckého zkoumání Orientu. Ve 20. století někteří autoři využili některé prvky assassinských legend, aby je propojili s výsledky vědeckých bádání a získali tak materiál pro tvorbu vlastních literárních děl. Myšlenkové a politické zázemí jednotlivých autorů bylo rozhodujícím faktorem, který utvářel výslednou podobu děl i způsob, jakým bylo s historickým materiálem nakládáno. Rámcový přehled těchto interpretací se nachází ve třetí části práce.

Abstract:

The aim of my thesis is to describe the historical influence of Hasan ibn Sabbah and the Assassins, and to map their influence on western literature. The first part considers the historical character of Hasan. I have made an effort to outline a wider frame of historical reference in which further atomization of Shi‘ite Islam branch and Hasan’s role in this process took place. Hasan’s position of a strong Nizari leader of the Ismá‘íli branch stands behind various important doctrinal and political innovations. In the second part, I have tried to reflect the reactions of the Sunnite and Christian contemporaries to the influence of Hasan and the Assassins. They, in effort to come to terms with the fact of Hasan’s existence, and to understand his methods, endeavored to repress and ideologically marginalize his importance. These efforts resulted in fanciful legends which had spread throughout the Islamic culture westwards, and which had been considered the true image of the Assassins for a long time. In western world, the Assassin legends have contributed to the creation of an image of Islam, seen as a dangerous and false religion. In that respect, the legends also projected into period literature and thus also contributed to deformations caused by researchers during the initial phase of the Orient explorations. In the twentieth century, some writers having been inspired by the Assassin legends, utilized their several elements in order to link them to the results of scientific researches, and thus, to gain the material for their own literary works. The ideological and political environment of each of them had formed the final form of the works as well as the way this material was treated and approached later. The framework of such interpretations is to be found in the third part of the thesis.
