Personality characteristics and coping strategies in adolescence

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zaměřuji na zjištění míry souvislostí mezi vybranými osobnostními charakteristikami (rysy osobnosti, self-schéma, inteligence, temperament) a zvládacími styly adolescentů. Celý výzkum se tak snaží zodpovědět otázku: Jakým způsobem vybrané osobnostní charakteristiky adolescentů ovlivňují jejich preferenci zvládacích strategií (stylů)? V teoretické části jsem přiblížila koncepty, se kterými jsem následně pracovala v empirické části. Nejprve byly popsány osobnostní charakteristiky, dále koncepty stres a coping a teoretickou část uzavírala kapitola věnující se propojení těchto konceptů, jež se opírala především o zahraniční výzkumy. Design této studie je kvantitativní, neexperimentální. Použity byly následující diagnostické nástroje: dotazník CTK, NEO-FFI, Škála jasnosti sebepojetí, Rosenbergova škála sebehodnocení, WISC-IIIUK, Vídeňský maticový test a Temperamentově-zaměřenostní dotazník TEZADO. Díky užití nestandardizovaných metod může tato práce přispět i na poli ověření jejich psychometrických vlastností. K empirické analýze svých teoretických východisek jsem použila data získaná ve studii ELSPAC (Evropská longitudinální studie těhotenství a dětství). Základním výzkumným souborem byli patnáctiletí adolescenti, kteří vyplnili dané dotazníky. Tato data jsem zpracovala statistickými metodami (faktorovou analýzou, deskriptivními metodami, korelační analýzou a příslušnými korelačními koeficienty, regresní analýzou). Korelační analýza potvrdila, že se zkoumané vybrané charakteristiky osobnosti vztahují k preferenci určitých zvládacích stylů. Přičemž těsnost vztahů většinou nabývala nízkých až středně silných, v několika málo případech až podstatných, měr asociací. Nejsilnější asociace se objevily u rysů osobnosti, a to především kladná korelace mezi neuroticismem a podlehnutím problému a negativní korelace mezi extraverzí a izolací, skrýváním problému. V rámci sebe-schématu (self-schema) se ke zvládacím stylům více vztahoval koncept jasnost sebepojetí než sebehodnocení. Z měřených temperamentových složek se nejsilnější asociace projevily u citlivosti, která negativně asociovala s izolací (stejně tomu tak bylo i u aktivity) a pozitivně se sebevědomým a konfrontačním zvládáním. Prokázala se taktéž negativní souvislost mezi emotivitou a vyhýbáním se problému. Nejméně výrazné souvislosti se objevily u inteligence, jejíž korelace byly pouze nízké. Nadále však doporučuji zkoumání jednotlivých vztahů a, ve shodě s různými odborníky, zaměření se na otázku, zda osobnost determinuje preferenci výběru copingové strategie, nebo je tomu naopak, a ověření předpokladu, zda pro jedince s určitým typem osobnosti může být více užitečný určitý druh zvládací strategie, zatímco pro jedince s jinými charakteristikami osobnosti tomu tak být nemusí.

Abstract:

In my thesis I deal with the exploration of the association between adolescent personality (personality traits, self-schema, intelligence, and temperament) and coping styles. Whole research endeavours to answer the main research question: How adolescent personality characteristics influence preference coping strategies (styles)? In the theoretical part I defined notions which were subsequently used in the empirical part of the thesis. First, there were described personality characteristics, and then stress and coping. The theoretical part was finished by a chapter about the association between these concepts resulting from previous foreign researches. For my investigation I chose quantitative non-experimental methods. I used these diagnostic methods: the questionnaire CTK, the NEO-FFI, the Self-Concept Clarity Scale, the Rosenberg’s Scale of Self-evaluation, the WISC-III, the Vienna intelligence test, the TEZADO. The thesis may contribute to verify nonstandardized tests which are used there. For the empirical analysis of the theoretical basis I used data which were obtained from the European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC). The research population consists of 15-year-old adolescents who fill up the diagnostic methods. The data were tested by the statistical methods (factor analysis, descriptive methods, correlations and correlation coefficients, regression analysis). The correlation analysis acknowledges that the personality characteristics relate to the preference certain coping style. Values of the correlation coefficients were from low to moderate, and sometimes they were substantial. The strongest association was between personality traits and coping. In particular, the positive correlation was between neuroticism and loosing control of the problem and second significant correlation was between extraversion and isolation, hiding reaction. In terms of concept self-schema, there were the following findings: the self-concept clarity had stronger relation to the coping styles than the self-evaluation. When we focus on the components of temperament which were measured, the strongest and negative correlation were between sensitivity (as well as activity) and isolation, as well as positive correlation between sensitivity and self-assured, confrontational coping. The negative correlation was between emotivity and problem deflection. The intelligence had the lowest association with coping, because the values of the correlation coefficients were only low. I recommend other researches to explore previously mentioned relations. And, in accordance with authorities, I recommend to focus on following questions: Does personality influence the coping styles (strategies)? Or coping styles (strategies) influence personality? And is there any kind of coping style which is more useful for certain personality and for other personality the same coping style is not so useful?
