A Psychosemantic Analysis of Drama (Approaches to Reading Sarah Kane's "4.48 Psychosis")

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je pokus o zachycení psychosémantických aspektů hry Sarah Kane „Psychóza ve 4.48“ a zároveň ověření hypotézy, že prostřednictvím psychosémantické analýzy textu, konkrétně uplatněním přístupu podle teorie významu Shulamith a Hanse Kreitlerových (1990), lze dosáhnout nejen podrobnějšího a hlubšího pochopení textem sdělovaného významu, ale také najít v něm společný význam tvořící základ pro rysy související se suicidálním chováním. Předmětem zájmu je tedy rovněž otázka, zda lze v literární tvorbě autorky, potažmo v literární tvorbě obecně, na základě psychosémantické analýzy detailněji zachytit jemné významové posuny v textu, které by případně mohly být vykládány jako znaky upozorňující na možnost blížícího se suicidálního pokusu. V teoretické části jsou uvedeny základní postřehy týkající se vztahu kreativity a suicidálních tendencí u tvůrčích jedinců obecně i konkrétněji přímo u dramatičky Sarah Kane. Dále stručný přehled týkající se psychosémantického přístupu podle teorie významu manželů Kreitlerových. V empirické části se zabývám základní literárně psychologickou analýzou textu hry a porovnáním přístupů ke čtení této hry, které zpracovali Ivo Čermák, Vladimír Chrz a Kateřina Zábrodská. V další části se věnuji vlastní psychosémantické analýze textu hry na základě přístupu manželů Kreitlerových. Vyhodnocení získaných dat a významových profilů autorky a textu potvrzuje, že výše uvedené předpoklady mají reálný základ, že přístup manželů Kreitlerových má značný potenciál k využití při diagnostice a prevenci suicidálního chování.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis wants to capture the psychosemantic aspects of Sarah Kane’s play „4.48 Psychosis“ and verify the assumption that psychosemantic analysis of a text (using specifically „The Meaning Theory“ by Shulamith and Hans Kreitler) allows one to achieve a more detailed and deeper understanding of the text’s meaning and also to find a common meaning wherein character features connected with suicidal behaviour can be traced. Therefore, the focus is also on whether psychosemantic analysis allows one to reveal in the author’s literary work, and in literary work generally, sublime shifts in meaning which could possibly be interpreted as signs of impending suicide attempt. The theoretical part consists of general comments on the relationship of creativity and suicidal tendencies in the personality of creative people in general and particularly in the case of playwright Sarah Kane, with the addition of a short review of psychosemantic approach of the Kreitlers. In the empiric part I undertake a basic literary-psychologic analysis of the text of the play, followed by comparing the interpretations of this play by Ivo Čermák, Vladimír Chrz and Kateřina Zábrodská. In the next part I present my own psychosemantic analysis of the play’s text based on the Kreitlers‘ approach. The evaluation of acquired data and the aspect of meaning profiles of the author and her text lead to a conclusion that the above-mentioned assumptions are valid and that the Kreitlers‘ approach has a significant potential as a tool for diagnosis and prevention of suicidal behaviour.
