Life stories of adults with learning disabilities: a narrative perspective

Abstract:

Cílem práce je porozumění zkušenosti jedinců se specifickými poruchami učení. Autobiografická vyprávění byla získána prostřednictvím narativního rozhovoru od deseti výzkumných osob ve věku 25-57 let. K analýze byly použity tři perspektivy narativní analýzy. Byly představeny rekonstrukce životních příběhů, které zachycují životní cestu výzkumných osob v jejich jedinečnosti, dále byly identifikovány oblasti prolínající se příběhy všech zkoumaných osob a rovněž byla popsána forma převažujícího žánru a dějové linie v příbězích. V příbězích byly líčeny obtíže a traumata odehrávající se na základní škole, další život s poruchami učení měl pak většinou stoupající charakter, i když jisté obtíže spojené s SPU přetrvávají také v dospělosti, zejména v profesi. Klíčovou oblast představuje aktérství zkoumaných osob, s poruchami učení většinou dotyční zacházeli aktivním způsobem spočívajícím v překonávání překážek, jako důležité bylo identifikováno smíření s tímto hendikepem. Obrazy sebe a sebehodnota participantů byly důsledky poruch učení negativně poznamenány zejména v dětství. Mezi nejdůležitější postavy v životních příbězích patřili rodiče a učitelé, s nimiž měli dotyční jak pozitivní, tak negativní zkušenosti. Obraz poruch učení i sebe samých u zkoumaných osob byl nejasný s konfliktními hlasy. Jako převažující žánr v příbězích byla identifikována forma romance spočívající v boji s omezujícími překážkami vedoucími k žádoucímu cíli prostřednictvím aktivního jednání hlavních hrdinů příběhů.

Abstract:

This study aims to understand the experience of individuals with learning disabilities. Autobiografical narratives were obtained through a narrative interview research from ten participants aged 25 to 57 years. Three narrative perspectives of analysis was used in the study: ten reconstructions of life stories were introduced to capture life course of participants in their uniqueness, common areas in the stories were described as well as the prevailing form of the genre and story lines in the stories. The difficulties and traumas took place at primary school were covered in the stories, later life with learning disabilities usually had the rising nature even though some difficulties associated with learning disabilities also persisted in adulthood, especially in their profession. A key area is agency of participants. They usually treated with learning disabilities in an active way, consisting in overcoming obstacles. The importance of reconciliation with their handicap was emphasized. Participants' self-images and self-worth were negatively affected as a consequence of learning disabilities especially in childhood. The most important figures in the life stories represent parents and teachers with whom participants have both positive and negative experiences. The image of learning disabilities as well as the self-image of the interviewed persons tends to be unclear with conflicting voices. The dominant genre of the stories was identified as romance consisting in the struggle with difficulties leading to the desired goal through the active agency of the main heroes.
