Effects of predation pressure and aquatic plants on abundance and diversity in diving beetle (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) communities

Abstract:

Čeleď Dytiscidae patří mezi významné zástupce bezobratlých ve vodních ekosystémech. V nádržích bez ryb plní funkci vrcholových predátorů. Cílem mé práce bylo vypracovat strukturovanou a obsáhlou rešerši, která spočívala v kompletní analýze vlivu predace a vodních rostlin na abundanci a diverzitu potápníkovitých brouků a vytipovat vhodné taxony pro experminet zaměřený na selekci biotopů. Dílčím úkolem mé práce bylo provést pilotní experiment zaměřený na výběr biotopu vybranými zástupci. Experiment probíhal ve čtyřech insektáriích na botanické zahradě PřF OU, které byly vybaveny tůněmi s různými kombinacemi typu vegetace a přítomnosti rybího predátora (Carassius auratus). V experimentu byl prokázán vliv vodních rostlin a litorálu na selekci biotopu u studovaných druhů (Acilius sulcatus, A. canaliculatus, Colymbetes fusnus). Možným faktorem ovlivňující složení společenstva by mohla být přítomnost rybí populace. Jako sekundární faktor by mohlo být bráno složení rostlinné vegetace včetně litorálu. Tento fakt však nebyl v rámci pilotního experimentu potvrzen. Vzhledem k nízkému počtu provedených sběrů je však nutno výsledky interpretovat s opatrností. V budoucnu by proto bylo vhodné naše pilotní výsledky experimentálně ověřit a případně studium rozšířit o další taxony.

Abstract:

Dytiscidae are among the most important freshwater invertebrates. In water bodies without fish they may act as top predators. The main aim of the thesis was to conduct structured and comprehensive literature survey analysing the effect of predation preassure and aquatic plants on abundance and diversity of diving beetles, and to select suitable taxa for experiment focused on habitat selection. Another aim was to conduct a pilot experiment focused on the habitat selection in selected taxa. Experiment was conducted in four experimental net cages located at the botanical garden of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ostrava. In each of the net cages there were water tanks with various combinations of aquatic and/or littoral vegetation and presence/absence of fish (Carassius auratus). There was a significant effect of aquatic and littoral plants on the abundance of study species (Acilius sulcatus, A. canaliculatus, Colymbetes fuscus). Other possibly significant factors could be the fish presence and composition of vegetation; however, these were not confirmed in our experiment. Regarding the low number of sampling occasions our results should be considered rather preliminary. In the future, our results could be confirmed, and the study can be potentially extended to other taxa.
