Communication by Instant Messenger: Accuracy of Personality Perception and Cues for Deception Detection

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá dvěma hlavními problémy: rozdíly mezi gramatickými charakteristikami pravdivé a lživé textové komunikace přes Windows Live Messenger a schopností odhadnout správně osobnost komunikačního partnera při tomto typu komunikace. Pro první část práce jsme porovnali komunikaci 28 respondentů v situaci, kdy měli za úkol komunikovat s partnerem a v situaci, kdy měli za úkol mu lhát a předstírat, že jsou osoba opačného pohlaví. Při analýze gramatických charakteristik obou typů komunikace nebylo zjištěno mnoho rozdílů. Dále jsme porovnali sebehodnocení osobnosti a hodnocení osobnosti partnerem dotazníkem Velké pětky po messengerové komunikaci u 56 respondentů v České republice a 46 respondentů v Číně. Čeští respondenti byli schopni odhadnout pouze Extraverzi partnera, kdežto čínští nebyli schopni statisticky významně odhadnout pouze Svědomitost. Rovněž jsme sledovali korelace některých charakteristik napsaného textu se sebehodnocením i hodnocením osobnosti partnerem. Práce dále obsahuje části týkající se tendence považovat osobnost oblíbeného partnera za podobnou své vlastní (zjištěna pouze v ČR), schopnosti lidí skórujících více v Machiavelismu působit při lhaní důvěryhodněji (nezjištěna) a rozdílných pocitů lidí při komunikaci, při níž jsou oklamáváni (zjištěna tendence považovat partnera za neurotičtějšího a méně přívětivého).

Abstract:

Thesis covers two main problems: difference between grammar characteristics of true and deceptive text communication through Windows Live Messenger and ability to judge accurately personality of communication partner in this type of communication. We compared communication of 28 subjects in situation, when they should communicate with partner and situation, when they should lie to him and pretend to be person of opposite sex. There were not so much differences found according to grammar analysis of both types of communication. We also compared self-perception and partner’s perception of personality using Big Five questionnaires. We had 56 subjects in the Czech Republic and 46 in People’s Republic of China. Czech subjects were able to judge accurately only Extraversion, Chinese were not able to judge accurately only Conscientiousness. We also analyzed correlations between some text characteristics and self and other personality view. Thesis contains also part about tendency of people to judge personality of likeable stranger as similar to their own (found in the Czech Republic, not found in China), ability of high-Machs to pretend to be more trustful during lying (not found) and different feelings of deceived people during deception through instant messenger communication (they thought partner is less agreeable and more neurotic).
