Dickens' female characters in relation to 'The Angel in the house'

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se soustředí na tři díla anglického spisovatele Charlese Dickense, ve kterých se v různých obměnách objevuje postava popsaná v básni „The Angel in the House“ z roku1862 od britského básníka Coventry Patmora. Tato postava sloužila jako vzor správné viktoriánské ženy, jejíž hlavním úkolem a radostí je obstarávat své blízké, ale obzvláště svého manžela, otce či dědečka. Romány vybrané pro toto téma jsou Starožitníkův krám (1841), Ponurý dům (1853) a Malá Doritka (1855). Již na začátku bakalářské práce je krátce popsána doba vlády královny Viktorie a postavení žen v tehdejší společnosti ovládané muži, v době, kdy boj za rovnoprávnost žen a mužů byl teprve v plenkách. Postoj Charlese Dickense byl ovlivněn ženami ve své rodině, přítelkyněmi a láskami, které se neostýchal, ať v dobrém, s humorem, či ve zlém, téměř ve všech zmíněných případech použít pro popis svých postav v románech. Celkem devět postav z těchto jeho třech románů bylo vybráno k popisu a porovnání, jelikož každá z těchto žen, přestože je výrazným typem „andělské bytosti“, oplývá i jinými, mnohdy negativními vlastnostmi a její dobrá vůle zachází až do krajností a může se stát i nebezpečnou. Charles Dickens vystihl nejen těžkou dobu, o které psal a ve které žil a vyrůstal, ale právě i stereotypy a zvyky své doby a své země. Jako moderní a pokrokový člověk se snažil s mnoha nešvary bojovat, včetně pro tuto bakalářskou práci důležitým tématem, a to špatnému zacházení s ženami. Činil tak převážně ve svých knihách, ale i svými skutky jako byla velká finanční podpora. Právě jeho knihy dokázaly otevřít oči lidem před 150 lety a totéž dokáží i dnes.

Abstract:

This dissertation concentrates on three novels by Charles Dickens in which we can identify versions of the so-called Angel in the House, a feminine role or type named after the 1862 poem The Angel in the House by the British poet Coventry Patmore. This figure made for a model of the right Victorian woman whose main task was selflessly to care for her close ones, especially her husband, father or grandfather. The novels chosen for this topic are The Old Curiosity Shop (1841), Bleak House (1853) and Little Dorrit (1855). The reign of Queen Victoria and the position of women in a society ruled by men, in the time when the movement for the equality of women and men was at its start, are briefly described at the beginning of the dissertation. Charles Dickens was influenced by women in his family, his friends and loves. He did not hesitate to use these people either for the good, with humour or for the evil, to describe his characters precisely. Nine female characters were chosen for analysis, since each of them bears other, frequently negative features and her good will does not know its limits and can at times even become dangerous, although all of them are strong types of the “angelic creature”. Charles Dickens captured not only the hard times about which he wrote and in which he grew up and lived, but also the stereotypes and customs of his time and his country. As a modern man with progressive thinking he endeavoured to fight many bad habits, including the maltreatment of women, which for the dissertation is an important topic. He acted thus predominantly in his books but also with his deeds and financial support. And it is his work of art which accomplished to open people’s eyes 150 years ago as much as it does nowadays.
