Abstract:

Ztvárnění postavy “Mammy” v bělošské literatuře amerického Jihu v poválečných letech (1945-1960) Tato bakalářská práce se soustředí na postavu “Mammy” a její ztvárnění ve třech poválečných dílech jižanských autorů: Truman Capote, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948); William Styron, Lie Down in Darkness (1951); Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird (1960). Krátká shrnutí dějů těchto knih jsou příloze III. Po krátkém úvodu do funkce stereotypizace v lidské mentalitě a v literatuře, práce sleduje vývoj černošské identity v jižanské společnosti s důrazem na rasovou stereotypizaci v tamější literatuře. Vývoj stereotypu “Contented Slave” je nastíněn v kapitole 2, kde je představena postava “Mammy”, neboť ona je jednou z hlavních představitelek této široké stereotypní skupiny. Byly vybrány tři rysy postavy “Mammy” pro komparativní porovnání v kapitolách 4, 5 a 6: její fyzický popis, vztahy mezí ní a černými a bílými postavami a její vnitřní mentální svět víry a snů. Krátké shrnutí výsledků komparativní analýzy “Mammy” postav v primární literatuře je zakončeno úvahou, kde se “Mammy” stereotyp nachází v soudobé literatuře a filmu.

Abstract:

Representations of the Mammy figure in white Southern literature of the post-war period (1945–1960) This thesis deals with the Mammy figure and its representation in three post-war novels by Southern writers: Truman Capote’s 1948 novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms; William Styron’s 1951 novel, Lie Down in Darkness; and Harper Lee’s 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Brief summaries of primary literature are provided in Appendix III. After a short introduction to the notion of stereotyping and its function in literature, the thesis briefly traces out the development of black race identity in Southern society with the focus on racial stereotyping in literature. In chapter 2 the evolution of the figure of the Contented Slave is traced out, and the Mammy figure is introduced in the context of this broader stereotype. Three major themes of the Mammy figure are selected for comparative reading in chapters 4, 5 and 6: her physical description, her relationship with white and black characters, and her inner world of faith and dreams. After a short concluding statement regarding the representations of the Mammy figure in the selected primary literature, the thesis ends with a brief look at the representation of Mammy stereotype in contemporary literature and film.
